Some players are said to be unhappy with Alonso. |
After replacing Carlo Ancelotti, Alonso quickly re-established discipline at the Bernabeu. Right from his first working sessions, he declared that every player had to run more, work harder and no one was guaranteed a starting place.
The Spanish coach also emphasized three core values including punctuality, intensity and absolute dedication. However, according to The Athletic , not everyone in the team welcomed this change. Many veteran stars felt offended and disrespected.
An inside source revealed: "Some people have won all the titles without following these principles. Now they are forced to change, they react strongly, especially those who were untouchable under the old coach."
However, there is no denying that Alonso is making his mark professionally. Real Madrid are currently 5 points ahead of Barcelona, having won all 3 of their Champions League qualifying matches. However, heavy defeats, 0-4 to PSG in the FIFA Club World Cup and 2-5 to Atletico Madrid, have left Alonso's reputation uncertain.
The tension peaked in the 2-1 win over Barcelona in round 10 of La Liga last weekend. Vinicius Jr showed his frustration after being substituted, then went straight to the tunnel without waiting for a reaction from the coach.
Those cracks show that even though Real Madrid still won, Alonso still has a long way to go to conquer a star-studded dressing room – which requires not only tactics, but also management skills.
