Technology and e-commerce giant Amazon said on November 24 it will invest up to $50 billion to expand its cloud computing division's ability to provide artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing capabilities to US government customers.
The project is expected to break ground in 2026 and will add nearly 1.3 gigawatts of capacity through new data centers designed specifically for federal agencies, according to an Amazon blog post.
As part of the investment, agencies will have access to Amazon Web Services (AWS) AI tools, Anthropic's Claude family of models and Nvidia chips, as well as Amazon's own Trainium AI chips.
The move follows similar announcements from Anthropic and Meta about expanding AI data centers in the US. Oracle, OpenAI and SoftBank announced the Stargate joint venture in January, with the goal of investing up to $500 billion in AI infrastructure in the US over the next four years.
AWS says the project will allow agencies to develop custom AI solutions, optimize data sets, and “improve workforce productivity.” According to Amazon, AWS serves more than 11,000 government agencies.
AWS CEO Matt Garman said the investment removes technological barriers that have held back the public sector and puts the US at the forefront of the AI era.
Tech companies have spent billions of dollars in a race to build enough infrastructure to run AI services. In October, Amazon raised its capital spending forecast for this year, saying it expects to spend $125 billion by 2025, up from a previous estimate of $118 billion./.
