Manager Ruben Amorim has spoken out after Cristiano Ronaldo continued to criticise Manchester United for “lack of structure” and “going in the wrong direction”. |
The statement was made at a press conference before the match against Tottenham in round 12 of the Premier League. Ronaldo recently gave an interview to Piers Morgan and said that Man United "have no organization", and also said that coach Amorim "is doing his best but miracles do not exist". The Portuguese star did not attack Amorim personally, but his words created a big wave of debate in England.
Amorim responded gently: “Ronaldo knows his influence. The important thing now is to focus on the future. We admit that we have made many mistakes in the past, but we are changing every day. Let's forget the past and look at what we are doing.”
The 40-year-old strategist affirmed that Man United is reforming from the roots, from the organizational structure to the way of operation and the attitude of the players. "We are progressing. Let's continue and forget the past," he added.
Under Amorim, Man United have gradually regained their form. The team has won three and drawn one of their last four games, including victories over Liverpool and Brighton. However, the defense remains a concern, having conceded 16 goals and kept just one clean sheet.
“We need to defend better, we can't lose so many,” Amorim admitted.
Before the trip to Tottenham, Man United were 8th in the Premier League with 17 points. A win could see them temporarily move up to second place, thereby strengthening the belief that the team is really on the right track under Rúben Amorim.
