Arsenal is now applying AI to football |
In a press conference before the match against Sunderland in the early morning of November 9, the Spanish coach revealed that he is using artificial intelligence (AI) to support both player analysis and tactics, with the goal of helping the "Gunners" end their 22-year thirst for the Premier League title.
"It's an incredibly powerful tool if you ask the right questions," Arteta said. "We're using AI in a lot of processes, not just to help the team but also the whole organisation run better. It brings new perspectives, helps us understand ourselves better and find out what we need to improve."
According to Arteta, Arsenal's technical team has developed a number of models to analyze player behavior, performance and tactical adaptation. The AI data is combined with on-field reports from assistant coaches and video analysis to provide a comprehensive assessment before each match.
However, the 43-year-old coach also emphasized that AI cannot replace humans: "We are working with real people, with emotions, psychology and fluctuations that machines cannot grasp. It is important to know how to interpret the data because if you get it wrong, you can go very far astray."
Asked if AI could replace him in the future, Arteta laughed: "That's not up to me. But who knows, right?"
Arsenal currently lead the Premier League by six points over Man City, and Arteta believes technology, if used correctly, could be the key to helping the team get over the line.
