The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) headed by Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has cleared a huge batch of arms procurement proposals worth around Rs 670 billion (over $7.6 billion) to enhance the operational readiness of the Indian Armed Forces.

India has just joined the "Hypersonic Club" with a missile that has a speed of Mach-5 and a range of 1,500km.

For the Indian Army, the DAC has approved the Approval on Necessity (AoN) for the procurement of Night Sighting System for Infantry Combat Vehicles. This will significantly improve night mobility and enhance the operational efficiency of Mechanized Infantry units.

India's BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles will be equipped with night vision goggles.

In order to strengthen the Indian Navy, the AoN has been approved to procure Compact Self-Propelled Surface Ships, BrahMos Fire Control Systems and Launchers, as well as upgrade the BARAK-1 Point Defense Missile System.

Compact autonomous surface vessels will enhance the Navy's ability to detect, classify and neutralize threats in anti-submarine warfare operations.

The Indian Air Force has approved the procurement of Mountain Radars and upgraded SAKSHAM/SPYDER Weapon Systems. The Mountain Radars will enhance surveillance capabilities along the mountainous frontier, while the upgraded SAKSHAM/SPYDER systems - integrated with the Integrated Air Command and Control System - will strengthen the country's air defence framework.

India is interested in developing drones.

The DAC has also given the green light to procure Medium, Long-Altitude (MALE) Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) for the Army, Navy and Air Force. These drones, capable of carrying a variety of weapons and payloads, will provide long-range surveillance and combat capabilities, enabling continuous operational readiness.

Additionally, the AoN is granted to maintain the C-17 and C-130J fleet, along with a comprehensive annual maintenance contract for the S-400 Long Range Air Defense Missile System, ensuring the high availability and effectiveness of these critical assets.
