The TOS-1A Solntsepek is one of the most iconic weapons in the Russian arsenal. Built on the chassis of the T-72 tank, the system is designed to carry out short-to-medium range missile barrages. Its missiles can cover an area of up to 40,000 square meters in seconds, giving Russian strike forces the ability to overwhelm fortified positions, or break through key Ukrainian defense nodes with a single sustained attack. On the battlefield, the TOS-1A Solntsepek system has been widely used against trenches, fortified bunkers, enemy UAV control stations and concentrated troop formations. Photo: @Известия. The TOS-1A Solntsepek’s ability to rapidly deploy powerful firepower makes it a key weapon for Russian units trying to penetrate multi-layered enemy defenses. However, it still has to contend with tough swarms of Ukrainian UAVs. Photo: @Известия. In fact, with FPV drones, hovering munitions, and surveillance UAVs becoming some of the most common threats on the front lines, the TOS-1A needs more cover to avoid detection and destruction before firing into action. So, marking a new step in Moscow’s efforts to bolster its frontline firepower against Ukraine’s growing UAV threat, Russia has recently deployed a new batch of upgraded TOS-1A Solntsepek heavy missile launchers. This anti-drone kit is intended to protect the TOS-1A Solntsepek Heavy Missile Launcher System from both aerial reconnaissance and direct drone attacks from Ukraine. Photo: @Army Recognition.
It can be seen that Russian armored and artillery units are being redesigned, or supplemented with active protection systems, electronic warfare tools and new technological armor, aimed at countering drones. The combination of powerful firepower, rapid attack capabilities and a newly integrated anti-drone protection system will make the TOS-1A Solntsepek heavy missile launcher an important tool in Russia's plan to maintain its position on the battlefield. This upgrade to the TOS-1A Solntsepek Heavy Missile Launch System also reflects a major shift in Russia's military planning, where drones are now seen as a primary threat rather than a secondary nuisance. Photo: @militarnyi.
