Hidden dangers of traffic accidents on national highways

However, due to the low awareness of traffic law compliance among some people, coupled with the lack of synchronous investment in traffic infrastructure, traffic accidents on national highways are complicated and unpredictable.

The national highway system through Dak Lak province currently has 7 routes, with a total length of over 811 km. In addition to National Highway 14 ( Ho Chi Minh Road), with a total length of nearly 175 km, which has been invested in upgrading and expanding quite synchronously, routes such as National Highway 26, National Highway 27, National Highway 29... through the province have narrow roads, not meeting travel needs.

National Highway 26, nearly 119 km long - the main traffic route connecting Dak Lak province with Khanh Hoa province - has thousands of vehicles passing through every day. Especially during the peak durian harvest season, the number of vehicles increases dramatically, causing traffic jams. The traffic infrastructure not meeting the development needs is one of the reasons for the increase in traffic accidents on this route.

Traffic Police Department officers (Provincial Police) check vehicles on Ho Chi Minh road, through Cu M'gar district.

There is no traffic congestion like National Highway 26, but the remaining national highways passing through the province have many schools, so there is a high risk of traffic accidents during rush hour. In addition, there are many residential crossroads connecting to national highways, and traffic safety corridors in some places are encroached upon by people for trading, holding markets... which leads to collisions and traffic accidents.

Every year, the number of traffic accidents occurring on national highways always accounts for a high proportion compared to the total number of traffic accidents occurring in the province. In 2024, the whole province had 438 accidents, killing 278 people and injuring 313 others. Of these, 168 accidents occurred on national highways, accounting for more than 38% of the total number of traffic accidents.

In the first 3 months of 2025, the province had 93 traffic accidents, killing 69 people and injuring 57. Of these, 45 traffic accidents occurred on national highways passing through the province (accounting for more than 48.3% of the total number of accidents), 27 occurred on rural roads, 15 occurred on provincial roads and 6 occurred in inner-city areas.

Authorities inspect the scene of a particularly serious traffic accident on National Highway 26 through Krong Pac district.

Mr. Bui Van Ngoc, Chief of Office of the Provincial Traffic Safety Committee, said that in implementing the annual traffic safety theme, from the beginning of the year, the Provincial Traffic Safety Committee has sent documents to functional units and member units to strengthen solutions to ensure traffic order and safety and curb traffic accidents.

Particularly on national highways, the Provincial Traffic Safety Committee regularly coordinates to review, count and handle "black spots" and potential traffic accident risks; review traffic organization in school areas, reorganize unreasonable points with potential traffic safety risks, especially schools along national highways.

Priority is given to the arrangement of infrastructure and equipment to ensure traffic order and safety such as school area signs, traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, and suitable speed bumps. On the other hand, authorities and localities are encouraged to arrange surveillance camera systems on national highways passing through the area to improve the effectiveness of ensuring traffic order and safety in localities.
