Invisible Light - Illuminating Humanity in War

Việt NamViệt Nam21/12/2024

War is the greatest misfortune of mankind. It is pain, loss, and devastating losses that leave nothing but meaninglessness, just like the nature of war. Set in the tragic context of World War II, Anthony Doerr's book All the Light We Can Not See (published by Literature Publishing House) looks at war from a different angle, bringing readers a very different range of emotions.

The story is about Marie Laure, a six-year-old French girl who unfortunately became blind. Her father is a locksmith and holds the keys to the Museum of Natural History. He makes her a miniature model of the neighborhood so she can easily navigate and find her way home. When Marie Laure is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris, and she and her father flee to Saint-Malo, a walled city where her reclusive uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. They take with them a legendary gem from the museum.

Werner - a German orphan who lives with his sister in a coal mine. He is a genius and has a special passion for repairing communication equipment. He is attracted by a primitive radio that the two brothers find. Werner later becomes an expert in assembling and repairing communication equipment. His talent brings him a place in the brutal academy of the Hitler Youth, then in the army with the special task of detecting radio waves to track the resistance.

With his skillful guidance, Anthony Doerr brings two young people together. Werner goes through the war, to Saint-Malo where he meets Marie Laure. The book shows us the beauty of the feelings that people have for each other even in the dire times of war. It is the boundless love that the father has for Marie Laure. When she came to stay at her uncle's house, her father made her a model of the house, guided her along each step and watched with joy as she learned to walk on her own. It is Werner, despite being in a Nazi uniform, with a kind heart, who continuously helped the resistance fighters, saved Marie Laure, took her out of the besieged city and helped her return the precious stone to nature.

A book set in the context of war, but emerging from the background of death, people see an invisible, warm light of sharing and love that people have for each other.

Anthony Doerr is an American writer who has won many awards in the US and abroad, most notably the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for The Invisible Light. He chose the war setting, creating situations that challenge the nature and humanity of each person, making people wonder what they would do if they were in that situation. Then, when faced with situations that challenge their values in reality, people have the right to choose, knowing that they need to behave properly to be worthy of their human values.
