Apple, like many other tech companies, is working to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) elements into its operating systems and software, and is likely to bring those products to consumers by 2024. However, Apple may have other plans for how to make money from AI.
Apple's AI strategy may not necessarily be to simply provide the best AI apps they can produce, but instead to provide an advanced AI App Store. (Image: gsmarena)
Accordingly, at Apple's upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2024), we may witness the launch of the AI App Store. This could be a major shift in Apple's latest AI strategy.
Ben Reitzes, head of technology research at Melius Research, believes that Apple may prioritize creating a platform for a diverse range of AI applications from different developers. Ben Reitzes explains why, referring to Apple's other app stores that have become industry-changing behemoths. " Apple has a history of convincing many tech leaders to create apps or do something with them, while Apple itself has always worked hard to perfect its app ecosystems, " he notes.
This approach also follows Apple's past success with app stores like iTunes and the iPhone App Store, where Apple has convinced other companies to join these platforms while also offering their own products.
Analyst Ben Reitzes also predicts that Apple will introduce a way for users to buy AI apps in the AI App Store at WWDC 2024. This new App Store could include Apple's own AI assistant (an upgraded Siri), along with service apps from competitors.
There’s also speculation that Apple may have talked to companies like Google and Baidu about adding their AI services to this potential AI App Store. With WWDC scheduled for early June, we’ll have to wait and see if Apple announces the AI App Store and what it will include.
