Apple recently announced a change to its iPhone repair policy to allow for the use of used parts. In an interview with TechCrunch , John Ternus talked about the change and responded to one of the biggest criticisms regarding the difficulty of repairing iPhones.

Making iPhone repairs harder is 'a good thing'

Back to Apple’s component testing program, through which iPhones can tell users whether the battery or display installed in the device is original or not, this issue has been criticized by many, including repair experts at iFixit. However, John Ternus defended Apple’s approach, saying it is “not bad.”

John Ternus said that this move makes many people think that Apple is trying to block third-party components from working, but that is not the case. The way we need to clarify is to know what components are used in the device for a number of reasons. First, Apple needs to authenticate that it is an Apple biometric device and not a fake one that affects the accuracy of the calibration.

If your iPhone has been repaired, Service & Parts History appears in Settings > General > About to show whether non-genuine Apple parts were installed.

Even if Apple allows the use of third-party components, the company still recommends that users use genuine components. Ternus notes that these third-party components will still work with the iPhone, with the exception of some components related to Face ID and Touch ID for security reasons. According to Ternus, these components are of great importance because they affect the amount of information on the phone, while Apple has no way to authenticate the biometric performance of third-party components. That's why the company doesn't allow the use of third-party modules for security functions. As for everything else, the company can do it.

Additionally, this information can be useful if you are looking to buy a used iPhone. In the Settings menu, you can see if the components used in the iPhone are original, as this can reduce the value of the device. It also helps you know if the repair shop used genuine components when repairing your iPhone, which affects the repair cost.

Ultimately, Ternus says that as long as Apple allows third-party components to be used on iPhones and notifies users, that’s certainly a good thing. The iPhone will function just as well with non-genuine batteries, but it still needs to be a warning to users.
