Apple invests $1 billion a year to develop AI

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên26/10/2023

According to Bloomberg, the investment decision is to help Apple catch up with other competitors, which are businesses that have released AI products on the market such as Google, Microsoft, Amazon... Currently, Apple uses artificial intelligence in some of its products, but has not launched any generative AI similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT or Google Bard, Microsoft Bing... Instead, Apple's AI focuses on features such as improving photo quality or automatic spelling correction systems.

AI is the new race in BigTech

Apple also has its own large language model (LLM), known as Ajax. The project is said to be a chatbot model, and is internally known as AppleGPT. However, this is still an experimental model and has not been released to the public. Ajax was trained on 200 billion parameters, which is more powerful than the 175 billion parameters of GPT-3.5.

Many sources confirm that "apple" is looking to integrate this AI into Siri, messaging software and Apple Music. For Music in particular, artificial intelligence will be used to automatically create playlists, similar to what Spotify is doing when collaborating with OpenAI.

Bloomberg also confirmed that Apple is developing AI for use in Xcode to support application developers, aiming to design software for users of the company's ecosystem. The people leading this project are John Giannandrea - Senior Vice President of AI and Machine Learning Strategy; Craig Federighi - Senior Vice President of Software Engineering; and Eddy Cue - Director of Apple Services.
