FIFA Club World Cup 2025 sees early match with different score

However, in the midst of a downpour of goals, Auckland City assistant coach Ivan Vicelich still affirmed that his players' fighting spirit was what made him "more proud than the result".

Against the mighty Bayern Munich - a force that had won the European Championship six times - Auckland, the semi-professional team from New Zealand, had no chance. After just six minutes, their net was shaking. When the first half ended, the scoreboard was 6-0. And in the final minute, Bayern sealed a 10-0 victory, setting a record for the biggest win in the history of the tournament.

“We knew it was going to be a very difficult game,” Vicelich said after the match. “Against one of the best teams in the world , it was expected that we would be overwhelmed. But I am very proud of the players for not giving up.”

Despite being behind, Auckland maintained their focus and followed their tactical instructions. Vicelich revealed that during the break, the coaching staff asked the team to continue fighting with the highest spirit: “We told them to fight until the end. And they did. For an amateur team, playing on the world stage is a rare experience. It is a dream for many Auckland players.”

According to Auckland City assistant coach Vicelich, the home team still played well.

The Oceanian side only managed one shot on goal in the entire match, while Bayern had 72% possession and 31 shots, 17 of which were on target. Jamal Musiala - who came on in the second half - scored a hat-trick, while stars like Kingsley Coman, Thomas Müller and Michael Olise took turns scoring.

Vicelich dismissed the suggestion that his players had too much respect for their opponents: “We were clear: Bayern can beat any team. That doesn’t scare us, it just makes us work harder without the ball.”

Despite the heavy loss, he affirmed that this was still a valuable experience: "The players are very sad about the result, but we will recover and learn from this match. The important thing is that they dared to go out and fight."

Auckland City will continue their journey in the group of death with two remaining opponents: Benfica (Portugal) on Saturday and Boca Juniors (Argentina) in the final match.
