(QBĐT) - For many years, Mr. Pham Ngoc Chi (born in 1968), residing in Thuong Giang village, Canh Duong commune (Quang Trach district), has boldly borrowed capital to develop fisheries logistics services, serving the needs of local fishermen in catching aquatic and marine products.
In 1994, after completing his military service and returning to his hometown, with the qualities of a "Soldier of Uncle Ho," unwilling to accept poverty, Mr. Pham Ngoc Chi discussed with his wife and borrowed 20 million VND from friends to purchase equipment and fishing gear for near-shore fishing. Initially, due to the small size of the equipment and lack of experience in fishing, the economic efficiency was not high. Undeterred by difficulties, Mr. Chi spent many sleepless nights pondering a new economic direction. Recognizing the unique characteristics of Canh Duong commune, where the fishing industry is thriving, and realizing that only by "sticking" to the sea can his family develop economically, in 2000, his family boldly borrowed 300 million VND from the Agricultural and Rural Development Bank to invest in developing a fisheries logistics service to serve the needs of local fishermen.
“When transitioning from one profession to another with limited capital, we had to be truly determined and find ways to make things convenient for the fishermen. That thought motivated my wife and me to overcome any difficulties, and now, our fisheries logistics service facility has developed steadily, providing convenience for the fishermen and gaining their support,” Mr. Pham Ngoc Chi shared.

Thanks to his determination and sound investment, Mr. Chi's fishing logistics service business has brought high economic efficiency to his family. From the accumulated profits, he continued to expand his investments in more product lines, meeting the growing needs of local fishermen. Currently, Mr. Chi's family specializes in supplying finished lead weights, nets, ropes, buoys, and various types of fishing line to fishermen both within and outside the province. On average, his family sells approximately 150 tons of lead weights and 330 tons of nets, ropes, buoys, and fishing line to the market each year, generating a profit of over 1 billion VND after deducting expenses.
Mr. Pham Ngoc Chi added: "Currently, coastal fishing grounds are depleted, and fishermen are turning to offshore fishing. Therefore, I continue to contact companies and visit areas with developed seafood harvesting industries to find suitable fishing gear to meet the needs of the fishermen. This is both a way to contribute to helping the fishermen and to work with them in protecting the sovereignty and territory of the Fatherland."
Not only is Mr. Chi dynamic in production and business, but he is also an exemplary farmer and enthusiastic participant in local movements. He has voluntarily contributed tens of millions of VND to social welfare activities and the local new rural development movement; guided and assisted over 40 disadvantaged fishing families with capital and supplies to develop their marine economy; and created regular jobs for 6 workers and 15 seasonal workers, with incomes ranging from 6.5 to 8 million VND per person per month. Local people consider him a "midwife" for the fishermen.
| The determination of farmer Pham Ngoc Chi, from Thuong Giang village, Canh Duong commune, to overcome difficulties and become wealthy has been praised and rewarded by local authorities and the Farmers' Association at all levels. From 2015 to the present, Mr. Pham Ngoc Chi has achieved the title of excellent farmer in production and business at the provincial level; and from 2017 to 2021, he achieved the title of excellent farmer in production and business at the central level. |
Fisherman Nguyen Thanh Hoang from Dong Cang village, Canh Duong commune, happily shared: “Every season, if we lack capital or fishing gear, we just go to Mr. and Mrs. Chi's house, and they will help us enthusiastically. Thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Chi, my family earns an average of about 150 million VND per year. Our family's finances are relatively stable, and our children receive a proper education.”
Seafood harvesting and processing is a strength of Canh Duong commune. The establishment of Mr. Pham Ngoc Chi's family-run fishing logistics service facility has helped many fishermen develop their family economies, contributing to the socio-economic development of the locality.
According to Nguyen Ngoc Tiep, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Canh Duong commune: "Mr. Chi is the owner of a fisheries logistics service facility and a member of the Executive Committee of the Canh Duong commune Farmers' Association in charge of the fishermen's sector. Therefore, we have a great advantage in discussing and disseminating the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's laws and regulations, as well as understanding the needs of fishermen in providing fisheries logistics services. The Association also regularly researches and searches for markets for fishing gear suitable for local seafood exploitation to exchange with Mr. Chi, so that fishermen can access new technology logistics services, helping them develop their economy and protect the sovereignty of the country's seas and islands."
