Sputnik news agency said the move was related to incidents affecting underwater infrastructure in the Baltic Sea, the latest of which was the EstLink 2 power transmission line connecting Finland and Estonia that stopped operating on December 25.
Finnish police said they were investigating the possible involvement of a foreign cargo ship. Finnish grid operator Fingrid said two ships were spotted near the undersea power cable before it was damaged.
Speaking at a government meeting, Mr. Tusk stated: "In the past few dozen hours, after another incident in the Baltic region, I spoke with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and the Estonian and Finnish prime ministers . Poland's voice has begun to influence concrete decisions."
The Polish leader said that incidents and damage to infrastructure at the bottom of the Baltic Sea have raised serious concerns for all countries in the region, and suggested that NATO and countries in the region need to increase control over this sea.
President Tusk stressed that the NATO Secretary General is ready to support Poland's proposal and "has received a signal from Mr. Rutte that we will cooperate closely on the project of strengthening military control to ensure the security of the Baltic region".
