On April 20, Gillian Mears (70 years old, Kessingland, Suffolk, UK) was extremely angry when she witnessed a group of teenagers vandalizing the back gate of her house. Mrs. Mears, a grandmother of four grandchildren, chased the group. Her neighbors also helped to try to stop the vandals.
In a fit of rage, she called the police and said she would “wring the necks” of the teenagers if she caught them. However, rather than focusing on the vandalism, the police reprimanded Ms Mears for her threat.
"I couldn't control myself and chased after the group of teenagers. The neighbors were kind enough to come out and help me. I called the police and only when I said that if we caught them, we would wring their necks did they come. When they got there, they yelled at me for threatening them, even though they were just words said in a fit of anger," Ms Mears said.
The incident did not stop there. After Mrs. Mears and her husband spent a large sum of money to repair the gate, the group of teenagers returned to vandalize it again. This time, Mr. John - Mrs. Mears's husband tried to confront them but unfortunately fell and injured himself. Mrs. Mears had to help her husband up and call the police.
The Mears couple said the total damage from the two incidents amounted to $520 (VND13.2 million). Now, they live in constant fear that the group will return. "The kids laughed at us, which made me feel hopeless," Mears said. "I really have no hope anymore, their parents should be ashamed of their children's behavior. My husband is old and has difficulty walking, and now he fell while trying to stop them. I had to try to help him up, which was really heartbreaking. And on top of that, we had to witness the gate of our house being smashed to pieces."
Suffolk Police said: "Police are continuing to investigate an incident of vandalism and public order involving a group of teenagers on April 20."
