From 1 July 2023, the Republic of Ireland will begin awarding grants of up to €84,000 to people who want to settle on one of the country's islands, according to news.com.au.
The islands are part of a policy to attract residents with beautiful beaches and scenery.
However, before applying, you need to do your research on where you are going. In fact, the islands are almost uninhabited.
Some islands have just two residents, while the largest has more than 700. In total, around 3,000 people live on the 30 small islands that Ireland is paying foreigners to live on.
The rate of population decline has been a concern for the country, so the government announced the programme earlier this month. Between 1996 and 2016, the population of the archipelago fell by 12.8%, prompting Ireland to take action.
The islands covered by this policy are isolated from the mainland and are not connected by any bridges.
The grants are part of a scheme that is now available across Ireland, with the largest amount being €84,000 for those choosing to buy derelict property on the island, while buying a similar property on the mainland comes with a €70,000 grant.
The money is intended to help people refurbish older properties that may be falling into disrepair and must be used for that purpose. The properties must also have been built before 1993 and have been unoccupied for at least two years.
Many European countries are scrambling to lure migrants to live in the most remote parts of the country. Last year, the Italian island of Sardinia offered residents €15,000 to move there if they used the money to renovate their homes, while some towns have sold homes for just €1 or for free.
Meanwhile, a remote town in Queensland, Australia, is offering people $20,000 AUD and a property to move in. The scheme is aimed at boosting the population of Quilpie Shire, 1,000 kilometres west of Brisbane.
