These days, in the rice-shrimp fields in Tan Xuyen ward, Ca Mau city (Ca Mau province), farmers have begun harvesting crayfish in the rice fields.
Most people harvest in the traditional way, but some households use the method of using fish poison ropes to both harvest crayfish and catch fish, and improve the pond, preparing for the new crop.
Mr. Luu Ngoc Quan, Hamlet 2, Tan Xuyen Ward (Ca Mau City, Ca Mau Province) previously harvested daily by fishing, but near Tet, he used chemicals to harvest all at once.
At around 3am, Mr. Quan sprinkled a thin layer of fish poison on his field, and placed a few traps next to it to block the path of the crayfish.
About 15 minutes later, the shrimp lacked oxygen and lay along the shore, at which point it was easy to catch the giant freshwater prawns. With this method, the giant freshwater prawns were caught without missing anything, along with crabs and fish. Farmers harvested and sold them all at once in the morning.
Harvesting giant freshwater prawns in the rice-shrimp model at night in the ward, people in Tan Xuyen ward, Ca Mau city (Ca Mau province) do not need to use oxygen, after catching, they will be dried and sold locally.
Mr. Quan said that this year, people raised a lot of giant freshwater prawns, and everyone had a good harvest. His family alone, with 5 large hectares of land, raised 15,000 giant freshwater prawns.
After 3 months of farming, Mr. Quan's family started to slowly harvest shrimp, this method will save time and labor.
At the end of the year, his family harvested both rice and giant freshwater prawns, and after deducting expenses, earned a profit of about 30 million VND.
Mr. Cao Van Thom, Vice Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Tan Xuyen Ward, Ca Mau City (Ca Mau Province) said: "In 2024, the Farmers' Association of the ward has many models to support people. In Hamlet 2 alone, the Provincial Farmers' Association invested 200 million VND for 10 households participating in the rice-shrimp production model.
During the year, this model was effective, farmers harvested rice yield from 1.5-2 tons/ha. On average, households earned from 10-60 million VND, people were very excited when the harvest and price were good.
The rice-shrimp production area in Tan Xuyen ward of Ca Mau city is concentrated in Hamlet 2, where there are more than 30 farming households.
In the days before Tet, the atmosphere here is more bustling when people start harvesting giant freshwater prawns with much joy and excitement.
Previously, people only implemented the rice-shrimp model. About 2 years ago, when they started raising crayfish in rice fields, the economic efficiency was better. The harvest season was also a happy season for farmers when they had an additional source of income to cover expenses and celebrate a prosperous Tet.
