Issuing the new Classification Table of Science and Technology Fields

The Ministry of Science and Technology has just issued Circular No. 24/2025/TT-BKHCN dated October 30, 2025 promulgating the Classification Table of Science and Technology Fields. According to this Circular, the classification table is built according to a hierarchical structure including: fields, sectors, specialties, and sub-sectors.

The Ministry of Science and Technology has issued a new Classification Table of Science and Technology Fields.

Circular No. 24/2025/TT-BKHCN applies to agencies, organizations, individuals engaged in science and technology activities and other agencies, organizations, and individuals.

The classification table of science and technology fields is used to serve the work of science and technology statistics; combined with other classification tables to serve the work of socio- economic statistics and other purposes; at the same time, it serves as a basis for management agencies to monitor, supervise, and evaluate activities in the fields of science and technology, allocate resources, and plan strategies and policies.

Contents of the Classification Table of Science and Technology Fields include:

Level 1 code includes 6 fields of science and technology coded from 1 to 6.

Level 2 codes include 46 science and technology sectors, formed according to each corresponding level 1 code and each sector is coded with three digits from 101 to 699.

The level 3 code includes 328 research majors, formed according to each corresponding level 2 code and each major is coded with five digits from 10101 to 60499.

The level 4 code includes 1780 research sub-fields, formed according to the corresponding level 3 codes and each field is assigned a seven-digit code from 1010101 to 6040799.

Details of the code and corresponding name are specified in the Appendix issued with this Circular.

This Circular takes effect from December 15, 2025. From this point of time, Decision No. 12/2008/QD-BKHCN dated September 4, 2008 on promulgating a number of scientific and technological statistical classification tables ceases to be effective.
