Changes associated with land and village names

Located about 8 km from the center of Ham Yen district, Bang Coc commune has a complex terrain, divided by Ngoi Yen stream, Mai Hong stream and rocky mountains interspersed with low hills. The commune currently has 6 villages, more than 740 households with nearly 3,300 people; the Tay, Dao, Cao Lan, Kinh ethnic groups live together in harmony, solidarity, diligence, creativity in production and building cultural life in residential areas.

People of Bang Coc commune share their belief in a new future.

Looking back at the history of local administration, few people know that this land has had many different names. Before the August Revolution in 1945, Bang Coc was one of 9 communes of Nhan Muc commune, Ham Yen district. In 1948, the commune was renamed Phuc Long. In 1952, Phuc Long commune was merged with Trung Thanh commune to form Thanh Long commune. In 1954, it was further divided into two communes, Bang Dinh and Thanh Long. Then, in 1958, the commune was officially named Bang Coc, under Ham Yen district and this name has been kept until now.

“In the past, we called each other Nhan Muc people, then gradually changed to Phuc Long, Thanh Long, then Bang Coc. The name change is not accidental, but always associated with important historical periods of the country, demonstrating positive changes in management and development. Now, the rearrangement of administrative units is a major policy of the Party and State, aiming to streamline the apparatus, improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the grassroots political system, ensuring harmonious, sustainable and long-term development. I believe that, even though the administrative name changes, the sentiment, origin and tradition here will still be a support for all generations,” said Mr. Nong Dinh Ngoan, former Party Secretary of Bang Coc commune. At the age of over 85, he still clearly remembers each period of change in this land.

With over 97% of ethnic minorities, in the process of development, ethnic minorities have blended in their material and spiritual lives to create a unique cultural identity rich in traditional values. The Tay people sing Then and Coi songs, and have the custom of wrapping cylindrical banh chung like wrapping gio (commonly called Banh Tay) on the occasion of Tet and the full moon of the first lunar month, making banh troi and banh that (wrapped in ngoa leaves, with ant egg filling) on the 3rd of the 3rd lunar month; making five-color sticky rice on the 5th of the 5th lunar month; eating duck meat, gai cake, rom cake, honey cake on the 15th of the 7th lunar month, etc.

The Dao people sing love songs, male-female duets (Pao Dung singing) at weddings, festivals, and cap sac dancing, praying for good harvests during worship or festivals. The Cao Lan people sing Sinh ca and many other unique cultural features.

Community life in each village is preserved, helping each other build houses, supporting each other in times of trouble, working together to build roads, preserve the rural landscape, and build new rural areas.

Expectations from the people

In Resolution No. 1684/NQ-UBTVQH15 passed on June 16, 2025, the National Assembly Standing Committee resolved to rearrange commune-level administrative units of Tuyen Quang province in 2025. Accordingly, Bang Coc will merge with Tan Thanh, Nhan Muc communes and Tan Yen town into a new commune-level administrative unit named Ham Yen. This is a major, strategic policy, aiming to improve the quality of state management, reallocate resources reasonably, and move towards comprehensive sustainable development.

Mr. Hoang Duc Nghi, a resident of Dong Quang village, Bang Coc commune, hopes: "I hope the new Ham Yen commune will not only be a new name, but will truly be a new driving force for development."

The policy of reorganizing commune-level administrative units is a strategic and correct step of the Party and State, aiming to perfect the organizational system towards streamlining, effective and efficient operation; at the same time, creating an important premise for socio -economic development, ensuring solid national defense and security in the locality.

The merger is not simply a change of administrative name, but an opportunity to restructure resources, improve the quality of service to the people, and expand development space. In that journey, Bang Coc with its tradition of patriotism, solidarity, hard work, and awareness of preserving national culture will become a part of the foundation, sustainable for the development of the new Ham Yen commune, an administrative unit strong in politics, stable in economy and imbued with national cultural identity.
