Unexpected culinary trend from traditional cake

Salted egg yolk mooncakes, a familiar type of mooncake, have recently become the center of attention on social media platforms. Instead of the traditional way of eating, a new way of enjoying this cake has helped it go from being unpopular to a phenomenon that many people are looking to buy, while also creating heated debates.

This popular way of eating is quite simple: the mooncake is pressed flat, then cut into small, bite-sized squares. Some people also put the cake in the refrigerator for about 20 minutes to an hour to let it harden a bit before cutting, making it easier to enjoy.

However, flattening the cake also requires skill. The eater needs to determine the position of the salted egg filling and press down so that the egg breaks out and blends evenly with the surrounding lotus paste. This helps ensure that each piece of cake has a consistent flavor, combining the salty taste of the egg and the sweetness of the filling.

Why is the new way of eating so popular?

According to many users on social networks, this way of eating makes the mooncakes more attractive. When pressed thinly, the crust is no longer as thick as before, the filling is spread evenly, helping to reduce the feeling of fullness. The sweetness of the lotus paste blends with the salty taste of the salted egg to create a harmonious whole, easier to eat than the original version.

Many positive comments appeared: "Thanks to this method, I had to go buy and try it even though I don't like eating moon cakes" or "I find the salty taste of the salted egg combined with the sweetness of the lotus paste and the cake crust to be a harmonious taste."

Controversy over price and quality

Along with the response, this trend has also met with mixed opinions. Some people think that the new way of eating is too complicated and does not change the original flavor of the cake. Some even say that flattening the cake is "disrespectful to the person who made it".

The issue of price is also a point of contention. A 350g mooncake with 4 eggs costs between 250,000 and 300,000 VND, a price that many people consider quite high. Some consumers are concerned that as the trend becomes popular, many manufacturers are chasing quantity without ensuring quality commensurate with the price.

A TikTok user commented: "Since it became a trend, I don't find it as delicious as before. I feel like places are following the trend but the quality is not worth the price."

Other versions on the market

To meet diverse needs, many stores have launched smaller versions of moon cakes with salted egg yolks (100g, 200g), with more accessible prices, starting from only about 70,000 VND.

In addition, another variation called banh chung soi also appeared but did not create a big buzz. The cake is made in roll form, allowing to combine many different types of fillings in the same box. However, because the taste is not much different from the traditional round or square cake, this version has not really conquered the taste of the majority.
