In an article published on The Daily Express in late May 2025, author Molly Toolan, from the UK, said that Thailand is the top tourist destination in Southeast Asia, but Vietnam is more attractive because it is a "new destination, less crowded, and possesses natural beauty, unique culture and reasonable costs".

Having traveled to Vietnam several times, the writer commented that the S-shaped land possesses many beautiful beaches “no less than Thailand”, still retaining its original wildness. Phu Quoc with its clear blue sea water and fine white sand beaches, or Mui Ne famous for its long sand dunes, are all ideal vacation destinations. The author mentioned Hoi An, famous for its ancient town with a strong cultural and historical identity, possessing peaceful beaches, suitable for tourists who want to avoid noise.

Toolan said that tourists to Vietnam should visit 8 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Ha Long Bay, a World Natural Heritage with thousands of majestic limestone islands. A boat trip on Ha Long Bay or kayaking among the rocky islands is an “unforgettable experience” for the British writer.

For adventurous travelers, the 370-kilometer-long Ha Giang route winding through the northern mountains is a memorable journey. The scenery along the way changes constantly, from majestic mountains, terraced fields to villages perched precariously on the mountainside. Molly suggests that travelers take an overnight bus from Hanoi to Ha Giang and experience a trip to explore waterfalls, terraced fields and ethnic minority villages.

Comparing the cost of food, transportation and accommodation with Thailand, the author said that spending in Vietnam is significantly cheaper, but still ensures quality. "This is an important factor for many tourists who want to travel for a long time," said Toolan.

The female tourist said that Vietnamese cuisine is famous for its fresh and flavorful dishes. Pho, banh mi, and spring rolls are not only popular in the country but also around the world. Toolan suggested that tourists take cooking classes in tourist cities. The classes are often led by local chefs.

A special highlight of Vietnam tourism is the coffee culture. Toolan believes that Vietnamese coffee is unlike anywhere else, with many variations such as egg coffee, coconut coffee, and salted coffee. Each sip of rich, aromatic coffee not only awakens the taste buds but is also an indispensable part of the local experience.

The hospitality and friendliness of the people also impressed the female author. From street vendors, homestay owners to local guides, they always smile and enthusiastically welcome tourists.

The writer commented that Vietnam tourism is on the rise, with significantly fewer visitors than Thailand, but visitors will avoid overcrowded destinations and have a more intimate, comfortable experience.

“If you are looking for an alternative to Thailand, Vietnam is a worthy destination to consider on your Southeast Asia exploration journey,” Molly concludes.
