Ahead of the final match of the 2025 Southeast Asian U.23 Championship taking place on the evening of July 29 at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, Indonesian media recalled the streak of 7 consecutive matches without a win between U.23 Indonesia and U.23 Vietnam - a worrying statistic for Garuda Muda.

Indonesia U.23's 7-match winless streak against Vietnam U.23

According to statistics from Indonesia's Antara newspaper: Since 2015, in all official tournaments from the SEA Games, the U.23 Asian qualifiers to the AFF U.23, U.23 Indonesia has never defeated Vietnam. The most recent was the AFF U.23 final in 2023, where the two teams drew 0-0 in 120 minutes of play, before U.23 Vietnam won 6-5 in the penalty shootout.

Previously, the Indonesian team also lost 0-3 at the 2021 SEA Games and suffered a 0-3 defeat in the 2019 SEA Games final. Even at the 2015 SEA Games, they lost 0-5.

In fact, at the 2019 U.22 AFF Cup in Cambodia – the only time the AFF has organized a lower age tournament, in preparation for the AFC U.22 Championship – Indonesia, under the guidance of coach Indra Sjafri, defeated U.22 Vietnam. Meeting in the semi-finals, Muhammad Luthfi Kamal’s only goal helped Indonesia win 1-0 against Vietnam, then won the tournament.

Antara Statistics:

U.23 Southeast Asia 2023: Indonesia 0-0 Vietnam (penalty shootout 5-6)

SEA Games 2021: Vietnam 3-0 Indonesia

SEA Games 2019: Indonesia 0-3 Vietnam

SEA Games 2019 (group stage): Vietnam 2-1 Indonesia

U.23 Asian Qualifiers: Indonesia 0-1 Vietnam

SEA Games 2017: Vietnam 0-0 Indonesia

SEA Games 2015: Vietnam 5-0 Indonesia

Antara newspaper wrote: "Tomorrow's confrontation inevitably carries the "smell" of revenge from Garuda Muda after a series of 7 matches without knowing the victory of U.23 Indonesia". This newspaper also commented that "apart from that somewhat uneven result, tomorrow's final is an opportunity for Kadek Arel and his teammates to end the series of poor results every time they face Vietnam. In particular, coach Gerard Vanenburg and his team will receive enthusiastic cheers from the home audience when playing the role of host of this match".

U.23 Indonesia ready to rewrite history

However, in the press conference on the afternoon of July 28, coach Gerard Vanenburg affirmed that U.23 Indonesia is ready to rewrite history. "The U.23 Indonesia team will prepare the best, fight to win the championship. Regarding the situation of the injured players, we will check whether they are ready to compete or not in the last training session. In the last training sessions, they only practiced lightly. They still look fine, but if not, I have to find other options. We will play with the strongest possible squad, focusing on recovery and will prepare a good spirit to win the final match."

The Dutch coach also revealed that the team has prepared carefully for every situation, including the penalty shootout: "We are not afraid if we have to take a penalty shootout. The players showed their bravery against U.23 Thailand in the semi-finals. The important thing is the spirit - whoever is confident will perform."

Asked about his voice loss, Mr. Vanenburg smiled slightly: "I'm better. But I think my students are good enough to compete without me giving too much direction on the field. Maybe they don't like me shouting all the time," he said.
