TTH.VN - The South China Morning Post (an English-language newspaper published in Hong Kong) has just introduced two unique relics of Vietnam. Along with the Notre Dame Cathedral in Ho Chi Minh City, the Tiger Fighting Arena in Thua Thien Hue is also introduced as a very unique destination in Asia that tourists around the world should not miss.
In an article about 5 Asian destinations for tourists who love adventure and discovery , the author of a foreign newspaper said that the Ho Quyen arena in Thua Thien Hue is a unique relic. The article compared this place to the Vietnamese version of the "Roman Colosseum", and emphasized: "The 200-year-old circular arena is surrounded by a high-rise grandstand, where the king and the people cheer on the matches between elephants and tigers in the central lawn area. Coming here, stopping in front of the tiger cages and trying to imagine the ferocious animals charging forward, surely visitors will feel the fear, even if they are sitting on the back of an elephant", the author of the article - Ronan O'Connell shared. Ho Quyen is an arena built under the Nguyen Dynasty to organize deadly battles between elephants and tigers for the King, courtiers and people to watch, and at the same time train elephants to get used to the fighting atmosphere when going into battle. Built in the year Canh Dan (1830), located near Long Tho hill, 4km from the capital, Ho Quyen has a simple but very solid structure, made of bricks, stone and lime mortar. Today, the arena is still quite intact. Source
