Bringing traditional crops far and wide
Lotus has long been a familiar agricultural product to people in Dong Hoa town in general and Hoa Xuan Tay ward in particular. Currently, this local traditional lotus variety is being brought by Hoa Xuan Tay 1 Agricultural Service Cooperative (Hoa Xuan Tay 1 Cooperative) to many provinces and cities across the country such as Nghe An, Khanh Hoa... Mr. Huynh Van Bao, Director of this Cooperative, said: 2 months ago, the unit cooperated with Ninh Ich Agricultural and Service Cooperative (Ninh Hoa town, Khanh Hoa province) to survey and test planting 5 hectares of pink-green mirror lotus, a high-yielding lotus variety specializing in producing seeds for people in Ninh Ich commune. This is a new lotus variety bred by the Cooperative from traditional lotus varieties, so pink-green mirror lotus not only stands out for its beautiful flower color but also its large lotus mirror and many seeds. Above all, the new variety shortens the harvest time, reduces pests and diseases and gives a 15-20% higher yield than the old variety. Not only this lotus variety, the Cooperative also previously bred a white lotus variety with double leaves. Creating new varieties from traditional original varieties is the way the cooperative accompanies farmers in converting high-quality plant varieties, aiming at safe - effective - sustainable lotus production. After 60 days of taking root in Ninh Ich land, the cooperative's new lotus variety is growing well, with lush green foliage, tall plants, and brilliant flowers blooming at the same time. In particular, the lotus mirrors are growing a lot, and the seeds are strong and healthy, which is a positive sign for a promising harvest.
“Previously, the cooperative’s lotus variety was also ordered by the Vietnam Cooperative Alliance to be planted at the cooperative’s project with Uncle Ho in Nam Dan district, Nghe An province. Regarding the contract with Ninh Ich Agricultural and Service Cooperative, the cooperative not only supplies lotus varieties but also transfers scientific and technical advances through training sessions on cultivation, care processes, and soil-water-fertilizer treatment methods suitable for the characteristics of the new variety. In the coming time, the cooperative’s technical team will continue to closely monitor and support farmers throughout the first lotus crop,” Mr. Bao added.
According to the Provincial Cooperative Union, cooperatives are an effective channel for agricultural production. Not only contributing to the management of the crop calendar, many cooperatives also always strive to find new crops to help diversify the local crop structure. In particular, some cooperatives apply scientific knowledge to gradually diversify the source of traditional local crop varieties and bring these varieties to the whole country, creating more marks for Phu Yen agriculture. This is a positive sign showing the progress in production management in cooperatives.
Like lotus, many traditional crops of the province have also been brought by cooperatives to other localities and are becoming poverty-reducing plants for people in many rural areas. A typical example is pineapple from the pineapple growing area of Dong Din (Phu Hoa district). Dong Din General Agricultural and Business Cooperative has brought it to Tu Nghia district, Quang Ngai province. According to Mr. Nguyen Hoang Chuong, Director of this cooperative, the cooperative has linked production and consumption of pineapple and fig with the People's Committee of Tu Nghia district, Quang Ngai province to distribute to farmers to grow and supply products. Currently, pineapple is showing its effectiveness, becoming one of the crops that brings a good income to people here.
Add new crops to the local area
Ms. Ngo Thi Lanh in Nam Binh 1 Quarter, Hoa Xuan Tay Ward has nearly 1 sao of black beans. After each harvest, she often has to sell them herself, so it is quite difficult to travel, takes a lot of time and the income is not high. When she saw many households participating in the model of growing sesame for medicinal purposes of Hoa Xuan Tay 1 Cooperative, her output was guaranteed, she decided to convert the land to this new crop. Ms. Lanh shared: Sesame for seeds is very familiar, but sesame for medicinal purposes is the first time in the locality. I am very happy because this new plant is suitable for the soil. I will grow sesame to have more opportunities to increase income and stabilize my life.
This model has been implemented at Hoa Xuan Tay 1 Cooperative since 2024. Up to now, the plants have grown well, so the associated company (Hong Dai Viet Production and Trading Company Limited, under the Central Medicinal Materials Research and Production Center) has increased the production area to 5 hectares. The company will purchase all the plants after harvest for growers.
Not only medicinal sesame, recently, through connections, cooperatives have helped bring many new crops to local fields. Examples include aloe vera being grown at An Hoa Hai Agricultural Cooperative (Tuy An District), and chili peppers at Hoa Hoi Agricultural Service Cooperative (Phu Hoa District).
Mr. Pham Tan Tho, Director of Hoa Hoi Agricultural Service Cooperative, recalls: A few years ago, I went to Muong Khuong Community Cooperative in Lao Cai province and saw them growing a type of chili pepper that bore a lot of fruit and had a fragrant taste. I learned their growing methods and brought them back to grow locally. The plant was suitable for the soil and climate, so it grew well and yielded much higher than the traditional local chili variety. Over time, the Board of Directors and I decided to expand the growing area in conjunction with the Project to develop chili peppers according to the value chain. The project was approved and supported by the authorities at all levels. Currently, the chili growing area of the Cooperative has been granted a growing area code. Chili peppers are not only sold directly but also used as raw materials for the Cooperative to process into Dong Cam chili sauce products...
