The Hill newspaper on February 19 cited a survey by a council of US presidential experts showing that President Joe Biden ranked 14th on the list of the country's best presidents, while former President Donald Trump was "at the bottom".

The purpose of the survey, which was conducted in 2015 and 2018, was to “create a ranking of the stature of presidents, covering all presidents — from George Washington to Joe Biden,” according to project leaders from the University of Houston and Coastal Carolina University.

Participants were asked to rate each US president on a scale of 0 to 100 for their “overall greatness,” where 0 is a failure, 50 is average, and 100 is great.

This year’s results are based on 154 responses from scholars “whose work is related to presidential politics ” and who are members of the American Political Science Association. The survey was conducted online from November 15 to December 31, 2023.

The poll found that Abraham Lincoln topped the list. President Biden ranked 14th with a score of 62.7, ahead of predecessors such as Woodrow Wilson, Ronald Reagan and Ulysses S. Grant.

Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump ranked 45th with 10.92 points, followed by former presidents James Buchanan (16.71 points), Andrew Johnson (21.56 points) and Franklin Pierce (24.6 points).

The survey also ranked Mr Trump as the "most polarizing" US president.

The results sparked a storm of criticism on social media from supporters of Mr Trump, the leading 2024 Republican presidential candidate, who criticised the survey's reliability and relevance.

Former President Barack Obama ranked 7th with 73.8 points, up 1 position compared to 2018 and 9 positions compared to 2015.

Former President Bill Clinton ranked 12th with 66.42 points, up 2 places compared to 2018 and 4 places compared to 2015.

Former President George HW Bush (Bush Sr.) ranked 19th with 58.54 points, while his son, former President George W. Bush, ranked 32nd with 40.43 points.
