Previously, when she was 26 years old, Ms. T. had to fight every day with end-stage renal failure. After nearly a year of regular dialysis, her condition remained "stuck". Recently, she successfully received a kidney transplant, starting a new life with her mother's donated kidney.

"I often stay up late and drink soft drinks instead of water. I have maintained these habits since I was in school. At that time, I felt my body could handle it, so I didn't care," Ms. T. recounted.

All of these seemingly normal habits have gradually and silently destroyed Ms. T's health.

In 2024, Ms. T. began to feel unusual signs in her body such as insomnia at night, only being able to sleep for about 2 hours each night, frequent pain in the bones of her arms and legs, difficulty breathing, swollen legs, and frequent coughing with phlegm. Thinking that these symptoms would go away on their own, she did not go to the doctor.

One day in mid-June 2024, while working, she fainted and was taken to the emergency room by friends at a hospital in Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City. There, doctors announced that she had end-stage renal failure.

Mother donates kidney to save daughter

After a month of receiving dialysis at the hospital, the family decided to transfer Ms. T. to Xuyen A General Hospital (HCMC) for treatment. On average, her father took her to the hospital for dialysis three times a week. However, after many months of dialysis, Ms. T.'s condition did not improve much.

On June 2, specialist doctor Vu Le Anh - Head of the Department of Nephrology, Xuyen A General Hospital said that at this time, kidney transplantation is the best treatment option for Ms. T. Therefore, after being consulted by the doctor, Ms. T.'s mother (57 years old) decided to donate a kidney to save her daughter.

After many consultations with experts from Cho Ray Hospital, in mid-May, the laparoscopic kidney transplant surgery from a mother to her daughter was successfully performed by doctors from Xuyen A General Hospital and Cho Ray Hospital.

After the surgery, the health of both the donor and the recipient were stable. Ms. T. recovered 90% of her health, her kidney function returned to normal, she no longer had pain in her arms and legs, and she slept well.

Doctor Le Anh said that patient T., like many young patients with kidney failure, is often hospitalized in need of emergency dialysis. Young people have good endurance, so when their bodies have high blood pressure or swollen legs, they often do not pay attention, and even when they are tired, have difficulty breathing, etc., and have to be hospitalized, they discover the disease.
