International observers say this year's race to the White House will be one of the most special events with the most variables that America has ever witnessed.

When does the US election start?

The US presidential election is scheduled to officially take place on November 5. The winner will serve the next four-year term in the White House from the inauguration on January 20, 2025. Voters participating in the election not only elect the president, but also vote to choose candidates for the Senate and House of Representatives seats in the US Congress . According to The Telegraph , most US voters will vote in person on Election Day. However, some voters may choose to vote early by mail or at designated locations. Each US state has different regulations on how to count votes, so the announcement of results may be a few days later than expected. In the 2020 presidential election, the United States announced President Joe Biden 's victory five days after Election Day, marking the longest delay since 2000. The delay was due to a surge in mail-in voting during the COVID-19 pandemic, which left many states unaccustomed to processing large numbers of early ballots, according to The Times . As usual, the seven battleground states that could decide the election outcome (Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Nevada) have all issued their own regulations on how ballots will be processed and counted.

Vote counting rules in 7 battleground states

Voting by mail is very popular in Arizona . In the 2020 election, nearly 90% of voters voted early, and most of them voted by mail. According to Reuters, Arizona election officials typically begin counting mail-in ballots after they are received, but do not announce results until about an hour after polls close.
In addition to Arizona, early voting is also very popular in Georgia . State officials expect 65-70% of voters to vote early at designated locations. Meanwhile, absentee and mail-in ballots could account for about 5%. According to Georgia regulations, workers must wait until Election Day to count ballots. In addition, all early ballots, including in-person and mail-in ballots, must be counted and results reported by 8 p.m. on November 5 (local time). Meanwhile, Michigan has implemented in-person early voting for the first time since the 2020 election, allowing precincts with more than 5,000 voters to begin processing and counting mail-in ballots eight days before Election Day. Michigan officials said the new rules are intended to speed up the counting process and release results earlier than in 2020. In an effort to avoid a repeat of the delays experienced last election season, some areas in Nevada began processing mail-in ballots on October 21 and counting in-person ballots early on Election Day. Reuters reported that voters in the state have increasingly favored voting by mail. Nevada is also the only state among the seven battleground states to accept mail-in ballots that arrive four days after Election Day. Like Nevada, North Carolina officials also began counting mail-in ballots before November 5. After polls close, the state will release preliminary results based on mail-in and early ballots. Election Day ballots will be counted throughout the evening, with full results expected before midnight. Meanwhile, Pennsylvania - the most important of the seven battleground states - is one of the few places that does not process mail-in ballots in advance, but only begins counting ballots at 7 a.m. on November 5 (local time). Finally, like Pennsylvania, Wisconsin only allows officials to count mail-in ballots on the morning of the election, which could result in a later announcement of results than many other states.
