Poor prognosis
Speaking with Tuoi Tre Online on the afternoon of May 4, Mr. Cao Viet Tung, deputy director of the National Children's Hospital, said that on the evening of May 3, the hospital received a child patient named MTA (4 years old) who was involved in a traffic accident and was transferred from Nam Dinh Provincial General Hospital.
As soon as the patient was admitted, the on-duty team examined and assessed the child's serious condition, diagnosed abdominal trauma, and ordered immediate emergency surgery.
"In the early morning of May 4, doctors performed emergency surgery on the child. The surgery lasted 3 hours. Because the child was run over by a homemade tricycle, causing kidney damage, but through initial assessment, fortunately the child's kidney was still preserved, and currently does not need to be removed.
However, the diaphragm (the membrane separating the chest and abdomen) was under great pressure, causing this part to tear. The emergency surgery was performed quickly, the surgeon stitched the diaphragm, preserving the kidney," Mr. Tung informed.
By the afternoon of May 4, Mr. Tung assessed that the child's condition was "still severe" but after the surgery, the child showed signs of being more stable. The child is still being resuscitated and monitored after surgery to assess the child's recovery.
"The most worrying thing is that organs such as the kidneys and intestines need to be monitored to see how they recover. The good news is that after surgery, the indicators are now stable," Mr. Tung informed.
People accuse "hospital of requiring full payment before emergency treatment"
Previously, as Tuoi Tre Online reported, 4-year-old MTA had an accident caused by a homemade tricycle that required the child to be taken to the emergency room on the afternoon of May 3.
By the evening of May 3, a 2-minute clip about the incident that allegedly occurred at Nam Dinh Provincial General Hospital was circulating on social media.
According to Mr. TT (the person who took TA to the hospital), the video recorded the scene where the doctor at Nam Dinh General Hospital did not give TA timely emergency care because he did not pay enough hospital fees.
"I ran a red light to take my child to the emergency room but I didn't have much money, only 500,000 VND, but the doctors said I had to have enough money to get emergency treatment," Mr. T. was upset because the child was run over by a tractor and had been taken to the hospital for 10 minutes but had not received emergency treatment.
Immediately after this video went viral on social media, many people expressed their anger at the inappropriate attitude of the medical staff. If the full amount of money had to be paid for emergency treatment, the child would have missed out on treatment opportunities.
On May 4, Nam Dinh General Hospital provided information about the incident. The hospital said that during the examination, ordering of paraclinical tests and treatment, the person who brought the child in paid an advance of 500,000 VND.
Hospital staff have performed administrative procedures on the hospital management software system so that patients do not have to pay additional deposits.
According to the explanatory report of the on-duty team on May 3, the medical staff did not directly discuss with the person who brought the child the content "paying enough money before providing emergency care". It is possible that while the medical staff were discussing to carry out administrative procedures, "it led to a misunderstanding by the person who brought the child" (the person who recorded the video and posted it on social media).
This hospital also said that during the emergency treatment at the hospital in Nam Dinh, the patient's family (MTA's parents) had no comments.
