The first hospital to successfully perform surgery using limb-preserving techniques

On the evening of June 24, Hue Central Hospital announced that it had successfully performed hip and femur replacement surgery using the Megaprosthesis technique - a specialized technique for preserving limbs for patients in the field of orthopedic trauma surgery. This is the first surgery in the Central Highlands region.

The patient is Ms. PTX, 71 years old, residing in An Cuu ward, Hue city, with a history of artificial hip replacement 17 years ago, and had surgery again due to loose joints a year ago.

More than 4 months ago, the patient experienced increased pain when walking, had to use a walking stick, had difficulty moving and had a reduced quality of life. Through examination and imaging, doctors at Hue Central Hospital recorded widespread bone loss, fractures around the artificial hip joint, fractures of the bone fusion device, misalignment and shortening of the upper limb by 7cm.

This is a severe and complex injury, with the risk of losing limb function if not intervened promptly.

After being admitted to the Department of Joint Surgery - Sports Medicine of the Center for Orthopedic Trauma - Plastic Surgery, Hue Central Hospital, the patient was indicated for surgery to replace the hip joint and more than half of the femur using the Megaprosthesis technique.

The surgery was performed successfully in nearly 4 hours, helping to restore the structure and function of the limb, while restoring the equal length of both legs. After surgery, the patient recovered well, was able to stand on his own, and began the rehabilitation process.

According to Director of Hue Central Hospital Pham Nhu Hiep, Megaprosthesis is a complex technique, requiring high levels of expertise and maximum coordination between the departments of joint surgery, anesthesia, resuscitation, diagnostic imaging and rehabilitation, to ensure accuracy and thoroughness in cutting, grafting and assembling artificial implants.

Megaprosthesis technique is considered the optimal solution for severe injuries that previously had a high risk of requiring amputation. Hue Central Hospital is the first hospital in the Central Highlands region to effectively implement the Megaprosthesis technique.

The application of this technique is not only an effective treatment solution for cases such as extensive fractures, bone loss, complications after joint replacement, but also opens a new door of hope for patients with bone cancer, complex bone lesions (previously at risk of limb amputation), helping to improve mobility and contribute to improving the quality of life for patients./.
