Be honest about medical errors and take action to improve them
According to statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), each year there are approximately 42.7 million medical incidents out of a total of 421 million hospitalizations worldwide. This means that for every 10 hospitalized patients, 1 person experiences a medical incident. Even in the United States - a country with an advanced healthcare system, the number of deaths due to medical incidents still reaches nearly 100,000 people each year, sometimes higher than the rate due to other causes.
"Thank-You Day" is organized periodically by Gia Dinh General Hospital every May.
Errors are inevitable, especially in a medical environment that is inherently high-risk. Medical incidents or accidents can occur at any stage of the care and treatment process, sometimes stemming from unavoidable factors related to the patient's own constitution. Facing that reality is not easy, requiring courage and a high sense of responsibility. Instead of avoiding or denying, Gia Dinh General Hospital frankly acknowledges and takes action to improve.
As CEO Dr. Tran Hung shared: “Mistakes are not something to be proud of and display. But we have learned that admitting and facing mistakes will help us gain valuable experience to continuously improve service quality. And facing mistakes also reminds each employee not to repeat the mistakes of themselves and their colleagues to care for patients more and more safely.”
For that reason, "Thank-You Day" is held annually in May, the day when all medical staff of Gia Dinh General Hospital look directly at their own mistakes and those of their colleagues to learn from their mistakes and ensure greater safety for patients. At the same time, we send our apologies, thanks, and gratitude to all unfortunate patients who have suffered injuries due to complications and risks during treatment.
Gia Dinh General Hospital staff contribute working days to the "Thank-You Fund"
Thank-You Fund shares love with unfortunate patients
One of the key activities of “Thank-You Day” at Gia Dinh General Hospital is to contribute to the “Thank-You Fund”. The fund is established and managed independently to share the burden and loss of patients who unfortunately encounter complications during treatment.
This year, the fund continues to receive support from the Board of Directors and voluntary contributions of working days from all hospital staff. It is known that during 6 years of operation and development, the "Thank-You Fund" has supported and accompanied many patients, being a practical support, sharing some of the difficulties they face.
A moment of contemplation and spreading meaningful messages
In addition to contributing to the fund to share the pain with the sick, on “Thank-You Day”, at Gia Dinh General Hospital, many activities took place to convey the message of gratitude: All hospital staff wore black and white uniforms, wore “Thank-You Day” stickers, temporarily stopped entertainment activities or service advertising, simultaneously changed their avatars and shared the message about “Thank-You Day” on social networks. Also on this day, hospital staff dedicated a “spiritual silence” to commemorate the unfortunate patients who were harmed by medical incidents.
“Thank-You Day” is a reminder of the imperfections, so that I can send my apologies, thanks, and gratitude to patients who are unfortunate enough to encounter problems during treatment. For me personally, this is not a formal day, but a truly quiet moment for me to reflect and learn valuable lessons from mistakes. From there, I can improve myself in my mission of caring for and treating patients," said Master, Doctor Nguyen Hoang - Head of Surgery Department, Gia Dinh General Hospital.
