The team of the Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery quickly connected the arteries and vessels to bring blood to nourish the arm and return blood to the patient, according to Master, Doctor Hoang Trong Hai - Department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery.
The team of microsurgery and plastic surgery specialists found the patient's brachial nerve endings, removed the crushed part, and reconnected it with four nerve anastomoses; the very small nerve bundles were meticulously reconnected through microsurgery, Dr. Bui Mai Anh shared.
After emergency surgery, the patient regained consciousness, blood pressure and pulse were stable, the reattached arm was warm and pink, and the soft tissue had lost skin. Experts at Viet Duc Friendship Hospital made great efforts to save Ms. H's left arm.
After 1 week of monitoring the infection and using antibiotics to resuscitate and improve the patient's condition, Dr. Bui Mai Anh - Department of Maxillofacial Surgery - Plastic Surgery - Aesthetics performed surgery to take thigh skin and graft skin to the left arm of Ms. NKH.
"After the nerves and nerve bundles of patient H's arm are reconnected, we will consider hand skin grafting to ensure the patient's aesthetics and psychology," Dr. Bui Mai Anh shared.
According to doctors, fortunately the patient received proper first aid from a lower-level medical facility and was promptly transferred to Viet Duc Friendship Hospital for emergency treatment, and the severed limb was properly preserved. If there had been a delay, the patient could have gone into shock due to three reasons: blood loss, traumatic pain, and infection;
Even if not operated on promptly by specialists, the patient will easily suffer arm necrosis, amputation or in the worst case, death.
Currently, the patient is temporarily stable and can be discharged; however, he still needs to go to Viet Duc Friendship Hospital for a re-examination and assessment of the arm's recovery.
It is expected that if the patient's wound progresses well, experts will prescribe rehabilitation exercises to gradually regain arm mobility, body balance and reduce difficulties in the patient's daily activities.
