Pregnant woman NTYM, 30 years old in Thach Chau commune, pregnant with her second child, at 39 weeks, went for a routine check-up at Thach Ha District Medical Center and was discovered to have the fetus' umbilical cord wrapped around its neck multiple times.
Here, Ms. Mai was advised by doctors to have a cesarean section to ensure the safety of mother and child.
The baby boy weighed 2.8kg and was born healthy.
With the consent of the mother and her family, the surgery took place on the morning of May 9. With the support of doctors, the baby boy weighing 2.8 kg was born healthy. After the surgery, the health of the mother and baby were both stable.
Doctor CKI Tran Thanh Hai - Head of Obstetrics Department (Thach Ha District Medical Center) said: "The patient had regular check-ups throughout her pregnancy, and in the 8th month, it was discovered that the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck 5 times.
The case of the umbilical cord wrapped around the neck is quite common in the last 3 months of pregnancy, however, the umbilical cord wrapped around the neck 5 times is quite rare and has many potential risks due to the process of transporting blood and nutrition to the fetus. The fetus can be underweight, anemic, or even die in the womb. We are continuing to monitor the health of the mother and baby."
