The administration of Tallahassee Classical Public Charter School in Florida received some backlash from parents after sixth-graders learned about the beauty of the statue of David. The incident led to the resignation of the school’s principal, Hope Carrasquilla, last week.
The Statue of David is a famous Renaissance sculpture, made by the artist Michelangelo in the 16th century.
After the teacher taught this work to sixth graders, some parents reacted to the school board because they thought their children were exposed to "pornographic" content.
Ms. Hope Carrasquilla shared with the Huffington Post (USA) that the school indeed committed to notifying parents every time students learned about "sensitive" content, which included classic works of art.
However, due to some omissions, this time the letter was not sent before the school's 6th grade students heard about the statue of David.
Some parents, upon learning about the incident, complained that their children should not have been learning about the statue of David so early. The content of the lesson left some children shocked.
A representative of the school board also admitted that the problem was not that Renaissance art was being introduced to students, but that parents had not been informed about the content of the teaching.
According to the Washington Post (USA), the lesson outline also included introducing Michelangelo's "The Creation of Adam" fresco or Botticelli's "The Birth of Venus". Both of these works contain nude elements.
A representative of the school's board of directors said: "We have had a consistent commitment since last year with parents, which is that the school will send advance notice to parents about teaching content containing sensitive elements, so that parents can prepare in advance and know in advance what their children will learn at school.
But this year, we have not done that. This is a shortcoming. We are a public school and parental rights are something we value."
