Biodegradable plastic packaging is a type of packaging made from biodegradable plastic that can be aerobically or anaerobically biodegraded (in the natural environment, compost or in solid waste landfills) into carbon dioxide (CO2), water (H2O), inorganic compounds and biomass. Recycled plastic packaging is packaging made from recycled synthetic plastics at a certain rate and has the ability to be recovered and recycled.
Plastic packaging remains in the environment for hundreds of years before it can completely decompose, leading to pollution problems due to not being recycled and being buried with other types of waste. The process of producing plastic for packaging also has a major impact on the environment such as greenhouse gas emissions, fuel consumption and natural resources. Packaging production has positive economic and environmental effects such as reducing the cost of using petroleum-based plastic raw materials in the production process, reducing the cost of waste treatment at landfills, reducing resource exploitation for the production of raw plastic, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Encourage sustainable production and consumption; enhance the competitiveness of products certified with the Vietnam Ecolabel in the market. To reduce solid waste, save resources through recycling and reusing plastic packaging; reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the production and treatment of post-consumer plastic packaging.
Vietnam Ecolabel criteria for environmentally friendly plastic packaging, in which the general criteria require products to be manufactured at production and business establishments that comply with the provisions of the law on environmental protection and other relevant legal provisions. 3 specific criteria include: on raw materials, materials, fuel; on technical characteristics, allowable limits of pollution parameters in the product; on recovery, recycling, treatment, and disposal.
In particular, regarding raw materials, materials, fuel: raw materials, materials for packaging production are derived from bioplastic materials (for biodegradable plastic packaging) or cleaned recycled PE, PP plastic (for recycled plastic packaging) and additives that do not contain ingredients, substances in the list of prohibited imports and uses in Vietnam. Do not use inks, dyes, colorants and other additives according to environmental and health safety regulations on packaging production.
Regarding technical specifications, allowable limits of pollution parameters in the product: ensure quality according to national standards or equivalent international standards (if any). For biodegradable plastic packaging, the biodegradation rate of the packaging is at least 90% within 02 years in the natural environment, compost or in solid waste landfills. For recycled plastic packaging, at least 20% of the packaging materials are from recycled plastic, with a thickness of 50 µm or more, with a minimum size of each side of 50 cm or more...
