The Ministry of Construction has just informed Hai Phong about the 'super project' of the railway.

TPO - The Ministry of Construction is rushing to complete procedures to start construction of the first five stations of the Lao Cai - Hanoi - Hai Phong railway line on December 19. The project is expected to open a new phase in connecting the key economic region of the North, from Lao Cai international border gate to Hai Phong seaport.

The Ministry of Construction has just sent an official dispatch to the People's Committee of Hai Phong City in response to the locality's request to soon start the Lao Cai - Hanoi - Hai Phong railway project.

Accordingly, implementing the Prime Minister 's direction on starting the construction of Component 1 of the Project on December 19, the Ministry of Construction is focusing on directing the Railway Project Management Board to conduct surveys, prepare a feasibility study report, design after the basic design, and closely coordinate with localities to carry out site clearance work.

Up to now, the parties have basically agreed on the route direction and station locations with the locality. The feasibility study report of Component Project 1 has been completed and the Ministry has approved the final report for the investor and consultant to complete and submit for approval.

The Railway Project Management Board is currently clearing the land, striving to hand over to the locality before November 10 at the 5 stations that will start construction including: Lao Cai, Phu Tho, Bac Hong, Luong Tai and Hai Duong Nam. According to the assessment, the project progress is meeting the plan and direction of the Prime Minister.

The Pre-Feasibility Study Report prepared by the TEDI - TRICC - HP - CCTDI Joint Venture clearly stated that the Lao Cai - Hanoi - Hai Phong railway has a starting point connecting the rails across the Lao Cai border and an end point at Lach Huyen station (Hai Phong City).

The line has 3 train stations, 20 mixed stations and 8 technical stations, with an average distance between sections of nearly 13 km. Of which, the longest distance between two adjacent stations is nearly 30 km (Bao Thang - Sa Pa) and the smallest is more than 5 km (Bac Hong - Dong Anh).

Lao Cai Station (new construction, 1,435 mm gauge), 1.6 km south of the existing station, with an area of ​​about 60 hectares, including 12 railway lines; Phu Tho Station in Phu Ho Commune (Phu Tho Province), with an area of ​​about 22 hectares, including 6 railway lines; Bac Hong Station (Dong Anh Commune, Hanoi), with an area of ​​9 hectares, including 3 railway lines of 1,435 mm gauge and 1 railway line of 1,000 mm gauge.

Nam Hai Phong Station will be built in Kien Thuy (Hai Phong City), with an area of ​​51 hectares, including 24 pick-up and drop-off lines, 2 loading and unloading lines, with the function of setting up freight and passenger trains, and preparing locomotives and wagons.

According to Resolution No. 187/2025/QH15 of the National Assembly, the Lao Cai - Hanoi - Hai Phong railway has a total investment of more than 200,000 billion VND (equivalent to more than 8.3 billion USD). The route is designed with a speed of 160 km/h on the main section from Lao Cai station to Lach Huyen port station, 80 km/h on the branch section and 120 km/h in the Hanoi area.

Previously, in an interview with Tien Phong reporter , Mr. Nguyen Danh Huy - Deputy Minister of Construction - said that in the immediate future, the project will build a single track line with passenger train speeds reaching 160km/h and freight trains reaching 120km/h. According to this design, the railway line will still meet transport capacity in the 2040 - 2050 period. After 2050, the Ministry of Construction will upgrade the project to a double track line on necessary sections, based on transport needs, efficiency and the project's ability to balance resources.

In particular, Mr. Huy informed that the section passing through Hanoi City, in addition to the single track of 1,435 mm gauge, can consider making an additional beltway with a single track of 1,000 mm gauge, to connect with the single track from the North to the South. Later, when wanting to upgrade the section passing through Hanoi City to a double track, it is only necessary to widen the single track of 1,000 mm gauge to 1,435 mm gauge.
