According to epidemiological surveillance reports, new sub-variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus spread faster and easily "overcome" immune barriers, especially in the elderly, people with underlying diseases, pregnant women and young children.
According to the Ministry of Health , from January 1, 2025 to May 10, 2025, Thailand recorded 53,676 COVID-19 infections and 16 deaths. Bangkok alone had the highest number of infections with 16,723 cases. From May 4-10, the number of new cases decreased to 12,453.
The increase in COVID-19 cases in Thailand is related to the increase of the XBB.1.16 sub-variant in the country.
The Ministry of Health believes that the risk of a large-scale outbreak is entirely possible if preventive measures are neglected. On May 15, the Ministry of Health issued a document recommending measures to prevent the COVID-19 epidemic.
According to the Ministry of Health, in the face of the increasing number of COVID-19 cases recorded in Thailand, there have been no concentrated outbreaks recorded in the country, however, there has been a slight increase in the number of cases in the past 3 weeks.
The Ministry of Health recommends that people proactively prevent the COVID-19 epidemic.
The Ministry of Health requires medical facilities to proactively strengthen supervision, closely monitor the COVID-19 situation, and implement epidemic prevention measures at medical facilities and in the community. Be ready to admit, provide emergency care, and effectively treat cases of the disease, especially high-risk groups (pregnant women, people with underlying diseases, the elderly, etc.), and prevent deaths.
The Ministry of Health emphasized that people coming to and returning from countries with high numbers of COVID-19 cases need to proactively monitor their health status to prevent and control the epidemic for themselves, their families and close contacts.
The Ministry of Health recommends that people continue to take good preventive measures such as wearing masks in public places, on public transport, at medical facilities; washing hands regularly with clean water, soap or antiseptic solution; increasing physical activity, training, and proper nutrition; when having symptoms of fever, cough, or difficulty breathing, they must immediately go to the nearest medical facility for timely examination, monitoring, and treatment...; limiting gatherings in crowded places (if not necessary).
