Bordeaux go into the game (played on June 2) in third place, behind second-placed Metz on goal difference, with only the top two teams promoted. Rodez are fighting to avoid relegation.
Bordeaux lost promotion chance after fan incident
The match was stopped after 23 minutes when a Bordeaux fan rushed onto the pitch and pushed Rodez player Lucas Buades to the ground just as he had given the visitors the lead. The referee sent both teams to the dressing rooms and then abandoned the match. Bordeaux's hopes of a replay were dashed by the latest LFP ruling.
Bordeaux called the ruling "incomprehensible and disproportionate" and said they would soon appeal to the French National Sports and Olympic Committee. In addition to awarding the win to Rodez, the disciplinary panel deducted Bordeaux points from the start of next season and closed the south stand of the Matmut Atlantique stadium for at least two matches. Police allege that a fan invaded the pitch and "violently pushed" Buades, who suffered a concussion.
Buades (No. 19) of Bordeaux was attacked by Bordeaux fans
A crowd of more than 40,000 fans gathered in Bordeaux hoping to see their team win promotion back to Ligue 1, a year after being relegated from the top flight.
Le Havre won the Ligue 2 title to return to Ligue 1 after a 14-year absence. Metz beat Bastia 3-2 in the final round, a result that put them in second place, three points ahead of Bordeaux and with a better goal difference. Meanwhile, with a win in the final round, Rodez still could not avoid relegation.
