The work is made on a double-sided lacquer background, measuring 2.4m x 7.2m, weighing 3 tons. The first side recreates the historical moment when President Ho Chi Minh read the Declaration of Independence at Ba Dinh Square on September 2, 1945. The second side is titled “National Spring”, expressing the joy of the people entering the spring of independence - freedom - happiness.
The work "Uncle Ho reading the Declaration of Independence" is being displayed in the exhibition "Independence Spring" at the Ho Chi Minh Museum.
Chairman of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association, artist Luong Xuan Doan commented: “The work expresses Ho Chi Minh’s style and personality through the creative lens of the younger generation. Uncle Ho’s spirit and demeanor are still present, but are interpreted in the artistic language of the 9X generation, youthful, fresh, and daring to be different. That is a positive sign of a generational transition in Vietnamese fine arts.”
He also emphasized that the appearance of Chu Nhat Quang is a notable highlight when generations of artists are gradually transferring to the 7X, 8X and young faces. “The art world recognizes Quang’s courage and boldness in choosing a major historical theme to challenge himself. Setting a record has a special meaning, not only affirming personal efforts but also promoting Vietnamese lacquer, a material that is “forever difficult to get old”. If not courageous, confident and daring enough, it would certainly not be possible to carry out such a project,” he said.
Young artist Chu Nhat Quang and his work set a world record
Starting in 2019, the painting took 6 years to create. Chu Nhat Quang and his family, especially his brother-in-law, painter Nguyen Thanh Tung, painstakingly researched the materials, combining traditional lacquer with modern materials, and consulting historical researchers to ensure accuracy. There were times when the work had to be paused for editing, but with perseverance and the support of colleagues, the work was completed in time for the 80th anniversary of National Day, September 2.
The most noteworthy point is the effort of artist Chu Nhat Quang and his young colleagues. Accessing and processing historical data, which is very complicated, is a big challenge, but it is also an opportunity for the young generation to affirm their mettle, dare to experiment and innovate. The responsibility of young artists in reflecting contemporary life is to both stick to history and immerse themselves in life, feel the reality of the country today to create. Only then will the work have enough power and emotion to touch the hearts of the public.
Chu Nhat Quang emotionally said: “When the work was recognized by Guinness, I felt extremely happy. This is a way for me and my colleagues to pay tribute to history, to send thanks to the generation of ancestors who built independence and freedom.” He also said that he will continue to create a series of paintings about President Ho Chi Minh and important historical events, considering it a responsibility to preserve national memory and spread the Vietnamese spirit to the world.
The lacquer painting exhibition “Independence Spring” by young artist Chu Nhat Quang (born in 1995) opened on August 18 at the Ho Chi Minh Museum, Hanoi, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution and National Day September 2. The collection includes 17 large-sized works, recreating historical milestones, glorious victories of the nation and the image of President Ho Chi Minh. With a style that combines traditional lacquer and contemporary thinking, Quang brings a new aesthetic experience, affirming the young generation's aspiration for independence, freedom, peace and deep patriotism.
