Blooming on the eve of spring

Dang Phan Lac Viet's works revolve around simple themes: it could be the emotion of watching an opera on YouTube, streamed for free by the artists; or the intense longing for Da Lat while confined to an apartment in Saigon during the Covid-19 pandemic; it could be images of family and friends, redrawn with the artist's permission, along with images of people and places he has lived and visited, leaving a lasting impression: Da Lat, Saigon, Hanoi …

"I paint as if hypnotized… Spring, summer, autumn, winter, and then spring again. The cycle of nature repeats itself: The cold winter, trees shedding their leaves, animals hibernating, life quietly hidden away. Spring arrives, and everything awakens from its long sleep. Trees sprout new leaves, and countless flowers bloom. After so much reflection and practice, I know it's time for me to burst forth and share the arrival of spring with everyone," the artist confided.

Dang Phan Lac Viet (born in 1974) comes from a family where his father is a painter and sculptor. He grew up in Da Lat, surrounded by houses nestled in the green pine hills. Living in an artistic environment from a young age, he became familiar with colors very early on. For him, painting is his breath, the way he expresses his feelings about the world and the people around him.

Having studied architecture at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture (1992-1997), Dang Phan Lac Viet continued to nurture and develop his passion for art through numerous group exhibitions in Da Lat and Saigon as part of the "Street on the Hill" program. In 2022, he won first prize in a painting competition depicting Poland as a beautiful and poetic country. Two years later, his paintings were successfully auctioned off in a charity fundraising program for underprivileged children in Binh Dinh province.

Until 2023, the artist suffered from a serious illness. "That was also an experience that I was able to grasp and recreate in my paintings. Thanks to the love, care, and concern of my family and everyone else, I was able to have an exhibition exactly as I wished, and I'm very happy that it was a feast for the eyes," Dang Phan Lac Viet expressed.
