Ripe grapefruits with the word "fortune" engraved on them are about to be harvested, ready to serve consumers on the occasion of the Lunar New Year 2025. This year, due to the impact of storm No. 3, grapefruit prices have skyrocketed.
Affected by storm No. 3, many areas of red grapefruit (also known as royal grapefruit) in Dong Cao village (Trang Viet commune, Me Linh, Hanoi ) were severely damaged. The quantity supplied to the market decreased sharply, and the selling price is expected to increase by about 50% compared to last year.
Dong Cao red grapefruit is uniquely shaped into the word "wealth" by garden owners in Dong Cao village to provide to consumers during each traditional Tet holiday.
Mr. Luong Van Phuong, a garden owner here, said that the red grapefruit variety originated in Dong Cao village about 70 years ago. "In recent years, we have begun researching how to put red grapefruit into molds with shapes such as gold bars, the words "wealth", "prosperity", and "gourd" to serve the Tet market," Mr. Phuong shared.
The grapefruits are placed in molds with many words for wealth, happiness and longevity...
Dong Cao grapefruit is a grapefruit variety with a special color and scent. The characteristic of this grapefruit variety is that the fruit is green, gradually turning yellow in August and September, pink in October and bright red near Lunar New Year. Normally, to make the grapefruit have a beautiful color, gardeners will wrap the grapefruit in a sealed bag. This also helps the grapefruit avoid pests that damage the grapefruit's outer skin.
Like other localities, storm No. 3 caused floodwaters to inundate many grapefruit gardens. "In just one night, almost all of the shaped grapefruits in my garden were ruined. Out of more than 3,000 grapefruits, there are now only nearly 100 shaped red grapefruits left. Luckily, the floodwaters did not harm the trees and their ability to survive in the future," Mr. Phuong confided.
The grapefruits in the yard were rotten and spoiled from being soaked in flood water. The surrounding area was still covered with mud.
Also because of the shortage, the price of red grapefruit has skyrocketed this year, including regular grapefruit and shaped red grapefruit.
The price of red grapefruit usually increases by 20% from 80,000 to 100,000 VND/fruit (price purchased at the garden), while shaped red grapefruit is twice as expensive, from 450,000 - 500,000 VND/fruit.
