Eggplant is an easy-to-grow plant on fertile soil, with low cost, and has been planted in some localities such as Yen Thanh, Con Cuong, Anh Son, Do Luong... In particular, in Yen Thanh, some localities have planted it in a concentrated manner with quite a large area. This year, eggplant growers have suffered losses because the price has hit rock bottom.

In Tay Thanh commune, for many years now, there has been an active change in crop structure, in which eggplant is considered a suitable choice, bringing significant income to hundreds of households.
However, this year, the price of eggplant purchased by traders is only 2,000 - 3,000 VND/kg. This is the lowest price in many years.
Ms. Le Thi Muoi, residing in Tien Son hamlet, said: “Eggplants are harvested continuously from March to the end of June, each month can produce 4-5 batches, each batch about 200 kg of fruit. My family grows 2 sao of eggplants. In previous years, the lowest price was 4,000 - 5,000 VND/kg, now it is only 2,000 - 3,000 VND. The most worrying thing is that traders only buy in small quantities, and the eggplants have to be left to ripen.”

In some eggplant fields, many old eggplants were left lying around. Because traders did not buy them all, the old eggplants were left unsold for a long time and had to be picked and discarded to "clear the ground" for the next batch.
Not only Tay Thanh, Tien Thanh commune, a locality with a long tradition of growing eggplants, is also in a "half-crying, half-laughing" situation. Mr. Phan Van Vu - Chairman of Tien Thanh Commune People's Committee - said: "This year, the whole commune has about 20 hectares of eggplants. At the beginning of the season, the price of eggplants was 5,000 - 7,000 VND/kg, but now it is only 1,000 - 2,000 VND/kg".

According to Mr. Thai Van Cam - Vice Chairman of Tay Thanh Commune People's Committee, the whole commune currently has nearly 20 hectares of green eggplant grown on fertile soil. If well cared for, the yield can reach more than 20 tons/ha, equivalent to more than 400 tons of output per year. Eggplant is planted from the end of November, after more than 2 months of continuous harvest.
However, this year, eggplants from the northern provinces were transported into the area, while limited output caused prices to drop.

Faced with that situation, the People's Committee of Tay Thanh commune launched a program to "rescue eggplant". Initially, tons of eggplant were consumed thanks to the cooperation of agencies and associations in the district.

This is not the first time Yen Thanh farmers have faced the situation of "good harvest, low price". Therefore, in addition to calling for consumption, it is necessary to have a production orientation linked to the market and diversify crops./.
