This is a key traffic project with a total investment of nearly 400 billion VND, expected to resolve the prolonged traffic congestion at the Northwest gateway - which has long been one of the city's traffic jam hotspots.

Nga Tu Dinh is currently the intersection between National Highway 1 (the main artery connecting Ho Chi Minh City with the Western and Southeastern provinces) and Nguyen Van Qua Street, an important route of District 12.

For many years, this area has been frequently congested, especially during rush hour, when trucks, buses, container trucks and private vehicles converge from many directions. The early completion of the grade-separated intersection here is considered the “key” to clearing the entire route.

According to the Management Board of Investment and Construction of Traffic Works in Ho Chi Minh City (Traffic Board), the Nga Tu Dinh intersection project will be implemented in the direction of building a reinforced concrete overpass along National Highway 1 (phase 1).

The bridge and approach roads are over 433m long, of which the main bridge is about 239m long, 17.5m wide for 4 lanes. The designed speed for vehicles running over the bridge is up to 80 km/h.

Not only stopping at building a bridge, the project also includes a system of two-way access roads about 600m long, from 2 to 3 lanes on each side, improving the turning radius at the branches entering and exiting the intersection to ensure visibility and traffic safety.

Auxiliary items such as drainage system, lighting, trees and traffic reorganization will also be invested synchronously to increase exploitation efficiency after completion.

The total land use area of the project is expected to be about 2.52 hectares, of which the majority is non-compensated land (2.36 hectares), the rest is compensated land, site clearance is about 0.15 hectares, affecting 16 households.

The total investment capital of the project is nearly 400 billion VND, of which construction and installation costs are about 146 billion VND, the rest is for site clearance, project management and contingency.

District 12 is currently urgently clearing the land to meet the construction schedule this year.

The Nga Tu Dinh intersection project was approved by the HCMC People's Council in 2016. By 2019, the city had allocated capital to prepare for investment, but implementation was delayed due to the need to adjust and complete the design plan.

By the end of 2024, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee will supplement the 2025 public investment plan for this project.

The Nga Tu Dinh project is part of the overall plan to upgrade the northwest gateway of Ho Chi Minh City - the area connecting with Long An and Tay Ninh provinces. In recent years, the city has invested in many important projects in this area.

Since 2020, An Suong underpass has been in operation, helping traffic flow between the city center and the provinces more smoothly.

Along with that, Ho Chi Minh City is preparing to expand National Highway 22, from An Suong intersection to Ring Road 3 intersection (Hoc Mon) to 10 lanes, with a total investment of more than 10,400 billion VND.

In particular, the 51km-long Ho Chi Minh City - Moc Bai expressway with a total investment of over VND19,600 billion is also being accelerated and is expected to be completed in 2027.
