Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam tournament on grass courts, is just two weeks away from taking place in the United Kingdom. However, almost all the players are already perfectly prepared for this oldest tournament.
Medvedev and Tsitsipas both had successful opening matches in different ways at this year's tournament.
The two top seeds of the Halle Open grass court tournament, Medvedev and Tsitsipas, both had successful opening matches in different ways this year. Specifically, top seed Daniil Medvedev easily defeated American Giron in just two sets with scores of 6-4, 6-3. Meanwhile, Tsitsipas struggled to overcome Barrere of France after three tense sets, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, to advance to the second round.
Medvedev's next opponent will be Laslo Djere, while Tsitsipas will face Nicolas Jarry. Also in the first round, Denis Shapovalov defeated Lloyd Harris of South Africa. In the second round, the Canadian player will have to face one of two strong opponents: Alexander Zverev or Dominic Thiem.
Meanwhile, two young players, Alcaraz and Sinner, are also participating in the ATP 500 tournament on grass courts in London. After his defeat at Roland Garros against Djokovic, Alcaraz received positive criticism from former players and legends. In his most recent statement to L'Equipe, Alcaraz said: "Physically, I'm perfectly fine. The problem is that I put extra pressure on myself. I wasn't well prepared for that match; the first two sets took a lot of energy, and the added stress afterwards made it impossible for me to control everything."
Alcaraz is currently in England participating in the Queen's Club tournament (June 19-25). If he wins the title, the Spanish player will return to the world number 1 ranking.
| Andy Murray, the British tennis player and former world number one, has had a perfect run-up to Wimbledon. |
Meanwhile, Murray, a former member of the "Big Four," has been preparing quietly but thoroughly.
Former world number one Andy Murray won 10 consecutive matches to claim two grass-court titles in Surbiton and Nottingham within a single week.
Murray's victory at the ATP Challenger tournament in Surbiton on June 12th was his first grass-court title in seven years, securing his seeding at Wimbledon. Continuing his momentum, the two-time Wimbledon champion triumphed again at the ATP 250 tournament in Nottingham, defeating Arthur Cazaux 6-4, 6-4 in the final on June 18th.
Andy Murray's 10th grass court title helped him climb 6 places to world number 38. The British player withdrew from the Roland Garros clay-court Grand Slam last month due to fitness issues, but is expected to make a strong comeback at Wimbledon – where he won in 2013 and 2016.
This week, Murray continues his participation in another grass-court tournament in England. The 36-year-old will face seventh seed Alex De Minaur in the first round of the ATP 500 Queen's Club Championships. The tournament features many big names such as Carlos Alcaraz, Holger Rune, and Taylor Fritz.
At the same time, several other stars such as Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Jannik Sinner are competing in the ATP 500 tournament in Halle, Germany. This trio started the grass court season with defeats in Hertogenbosch and Stuttgart last week.
In Stuttgart, Frances Tiafoe won the title after defeating Jan-Lennard Struff 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 in the final. The American player thus entered the world top 10, taking the place of Karen Khachanov. Meanwhile, in Hertogenbosch, Tallon Griekspoor also came from behind to beat Jordan Thompson 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 to win his second ATP title.
The grass court season has begun in full swing. With the thorough preparation of the world's top players, it is expected to be a fascinating and dramatic season.
