Apple says it has prevented more than $9 billion in fraudulent transactions on its App Store over the past five years, with $2 billion expected in 2024 alone.

In 2024, Apple suspended more than 146,000 developer accounts over concerns of violations and rejected 139,000 developer registrations, in an effort to prevent bad actors from submitting malicious apps to the App Store in the first place.

Next, Apple identified nearly 4.7 million stolen credit cards, blocking transactions from more than 1.6 million accounts. The company also blocked more than 711 million customer account creations in 2024, disabling nearly 129 million accounts.

According to Apple, account suspensions are meant to deter actions that violate our policies. Some of the actions that are not allowed on the App Store include spamming, manipulating ratings, reviews, leaderboards, and search results.

Apple also worked to block more than 10,000 illegal apps from appearing on unauthorized app stores, including malware, porn apps, gambling apps, and pirated versions of apps from the App Store.

The app review process also helps prevent malware. On average, Apple’s team reviews nearly 150,000 app submissions per week. Of the more than 7.7 million submissions in 2024, more than 1.9 million apps were rejected for failing to meet the App Store’s standards for security, reliability, and user experience.

After receiving information about a violating app, Apple will check apps from the same developer. In 2024, more than 37,000 apps were removed for fraudulent behavior, and more than 43,000 apps were rejected for containing hidden features or not being mentioned in the description.

During the same period, more than 320,000 apps were rejected for copying other apps, sending spam, or misleading users. Another tactic was to disguise malicious apps as harmless, resulting in more than 17,000 apps being detected and blocked.

Ultimately, Apple processed more than 1.2 billion App Store ratings and reviews in 2024. More than 143 million reviews were removed due to fraudulent behavior, resulting in more than 7,400 apps being removed from the rankings and nearly 9,500 apps being removed from App Store search results.

Apple emphasizes that these moves are aimed at ensuring a safe experience for users and providing useful tools and resources to developers.

“With an average of more than 813 million visitors per week, the App Store is the trusted destination for people to download the apps they love and discover new ones,” Apple said in a press release.

Apple's app distribution platform has faced challenges in recent times, such as Epic Games' lawsuit over exclusivity and cut-rates, and regulations such as the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA) forcing Apple to loosen its control over the App Store.

On Apple's side, the company has repeatedly stressed that the current model provides safety for users. Allowing external app stores can create security threats, depending on third-party policies and regulations.

“Apple takes a comprehensive approach to combating fraud on the App Store, with teams of experts across the company working to detect, investigate, and stop malicious behavior before it can reach users,” the company stressed.
