Apple says it has prevented fraudulent transactions on the App Store totaling more than $9 billion over the past five years. In 2024 alone, that figure was $2 billion .
In 2024, Apple suspended over 146,000 developer accounts due to concerns about violations and rejected 139,000 developer applications. This was aimed at preventing malicious actors from submitting harmful apps to the App Store in the first place.
Next, Apple identified nearly 4.7 million stolen credit cards, banning transactions on more than 1.6 million accounts. The company also blocked over 711 million customer account creations in 2024, deactivating nearly 129 million accounts.
According to Apple, suspending accounts helps deter policy violations. Some behaviors prohibited on the App Store include spamming, manipulating ratings, comments, rankings, and search results.
Apple is also working to prevent more than 10,000 illegal apps from appearing on unauthorized app stores, including malware, pornographic apps, gambling apps, and pirated versions of apps from the App Store.
The app review process also helps prevent malware. On average, Apple's team reviews nearly 150,000 app applications each week. With over 7.7 million applications in 2024, more than 1.9 million apps were rejected for not meeting the App Store's standards for security, reliability, and user experience.
After receiving information about a violating app, Apple checks other apps from the same developer. In 2024, more than 37,000 apps were removed due to fraudulent behavior, and more than 43,000 apps were rejected for containing hidden features or features not listed in the description.
During the same period, over 320,000 apps were rejected for copying other apps, sending spam, or misleading users. Another tactic involved disguising malicious apps under the guise of harmless ones, resulting in the detection and blocking of over 17,000 apps.
Ultimately, Apple processed over 1.2 billion ratings and reviews on the App Store in 2024. Over 143 million reviews were removed due to fraudulent behavior. This resulted in over 7,400 apps being removed from rankings and nearly 9,500 apps being removed from App Store search results.

Apple emphasized that these measures are aimed at ensuring a safe user experience and providing helpful tools and resources to developers.
"With an average of over 813 million visitors per week, the App Store is a trusted destination for users to download their favorite apps and discover new ones," Apple's press release stated.
Recently, Apple's app distribution platform has faced numerous challenges, such as the lawsuit from Epic Games regarding monopolistic practices and commission rates. Regulations like the European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA) have forced Apple to loosen its control over the App Store.
Apple, for its part, has repeatedly emphasized that the current model provides security for users. Allowing external app stores could create security threats, depending on the policies and regulations of those third parties.
"Apple employs a comprehensive approach to combat fraud on the App Store, with teams of experts across the company responsible for detecting, investigating, and preventing malicious activity before it reaches users," the company emphasized.
