How to pack and preserve food during floods

The rainy season always carries the risk of power outages, traffic disruptions and water pollution. Being proactive in preparing a complete and safe food list is the most important step to ensure nutrition and health for the family in emergency conditions.

Canned and prepackaged foods

These products have long shelf life and sealed packaging, ensuring food hygiene and safety.

- Canned meat, canned fish (sardines, tuna): Provide essential protein.

- Sterilized sausages, boxed pate: Convenient and nutritious.

- Canned vegetables and fruits: Supplement vitamins and fiber, prevent nutritional deficiencies.

Important Note: It is essential to have a spare can opener (or choose a pull/unlock type) and carefully inspect the can for dents, rust, or bulges.

Dry food and instant food

These are important because cooking is often limited or impossible.

- Instant noodles, instant pho, instant porridge: Easy to prepare (only need hot/boiling water), compact. However, instant noodles do not have high nutritional content, so they should be used with canned food. Pre-cooked canned porridge can be eaten immediately without heat or water. This is the biggest advantage.

In a flood situation, clean water and cooking capabilities (power outage, gas outage) are very limited. Canned/fresh porridge has been cooked, sterilized, and can be consumed immediately to maintain energy. Fresh porridge is usually packaged in a composite bag or heat-resistant, airtight box, which helps protect the product from moisture and flooding (however, it should still be stored in a high place).

This food is very suitable for the elderly, children or sick, tired people in emergency conditions. Thanks to sterilization technology (UHT), fresh porridge has a fairly long shelf life (usually from 6 months to 1 year) without the need for refrigeration.

- Dry food, salty/sweet biscuits: Provide high energy, can be eaten immediately without processing.

- Instant cereal and oatmeal: Quick, nutritious, easy-to-digest meals.

- Beans and dried seeds: Can be preserved for a long time, rich in nutrients.

Source of liquids and minerals

During floods, clean water sources are seriously threatened.

Bottled water

Priority 1. Store at least 4 liters of water per person per day for basic drinking and cooking purposes for 3-5 days. Place in the highest, driest place possible.

Fruit juice/Canned milk (UHT type):

Advantages: Supplements vitamins, minerals and energy. UHT milk (sterilized fresh type) does not need refrigeration and can be used immediately.

Basic spices (salt, sugar )

Advantages: Salt is necessary for seasoning and is especially important for replenishing electrolytes when the body is dehydrated or has diarrhea (common after floods).

Other nutritional supplements

- Condensed milk, powdered milk, canned liquid milk: Provide calcium and energy, especially important for the elderly and children.

- Shredded pork, sesame salt: Easy to eat with rice or bread in case of food shortage.

- Cooking oil: Necessary for food preparation if cooking is possible.

Important packaging and storage during floods

The decisive factor for food safety during flood season is not only the type of food but also the way it is preserved.

- Use sealed containers/boxes: Put all dry foods (rice, noodles, seeds, dry food) in plastic containers with tight lids (the type with rubber gaskets is better) or ziplock/vacuum bags to prevent moisture and flooding.

- Store in a high place: Arrange all stored food, especially drinking water, in the highest place in the house (attic, upper floor, or on high shelves) to avoid flooding.

- Check and rotate: Periodically check (every 6 months) the expiry date of canned food, milk and dry food to replace, ensuring food is always fresh and safe when needed.

- Waterproof packaging: Store food in waterproof bags or boxes to avoid damage from flooding.

- Prioritize food processed in safe facilities: Choose to buy products from reputable manufacturers, with full labels and expiration dates.
