I wish a day had more than 24 hours
Implementing the direction of the Secretariat, on February 10, 2023, the Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army announced the Decision of the Minister of National Defense on assigning tasks to forces participating in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief in Turkey. 76 elite soldiers were assembled into the force participating in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief of the Vietnam People's Army. Hundreds of packages of medical supplies, dozens of tons of food, necessities and the most modern search support equipment were prepared by officers and soldiers of the units day and night.
Captain Phung Chi Cuong works at the scene of the great earthquake.
Receiving the mission of the leader of Vietnam National Defense Television Channel, Captain Phung Chi Cuong - Editor of Television News Department and Captain Nguyen Thi Tung - Cameraman, Cameraman & Director Department and colleagues in the Military Radio - Television Center immediately set off, accompanying the Relief Team of the Vietnam People's Army.
“Our team is made up of soldiers, officers and reporters who have many years of experience working to help people during floods and historic natural disasters, or following the army to help people across the country during the rainy and stormy seasons. Having worked independently many times at important international events, we have learned how to do all the pre-production stages ourselves to have good works that can be promptly sent back to the country for broadcasting,” shared Captain Phung Chi Cuong.
The equipment used for filming, editing, and editing is fully prepared, with backup plans taken into account. In addition, survival equipment and personal food reserves are indispensable items in the soldiers' luggage.
The search site assigned to the Vietnam People's Army rescue force is the Haci Omer Alpagot commune, Antakya district, Hatay province. The rescue tactics applied are: The teams conduct reconnaissance of the target. If they detect a target that needs to be removed from the collapsed area or signs that need rescue, they will immediately report to the commander to mobilize the engineering force to the scene to carry out professional measures to carry out the rescue work. The medical force on the outside is ready to provide first aid if necessary, or take measures to remove the victim from the scene and hand him over to local authorities.
Around the rubble, residents are still panicking, trying to wait for news of missing loved ones. Some people have chosen to sleep in their cars every night since the earthquake, fearing that there will be new seismic activity, after they felt intermittent aftershocks... Through the guidance of the people, the Vietnam People's Army rescue team has information about the location of the first victims.
The rescue team quickly carried out the task of searching for victims.
Captain Phung Chi Cuong said that Turkey is 4 hours ahead of Vietnam. That means that when the group of reporters woke up in Hatay, half a day had already passed in Vietnam. “We had to work hard day and night to meet the demand for timely information about Vietnam. Fortunately, we received great support from the “rear”. With the close guidance of the Board of Directors of the Military Radio and Television Center, directly from the Director, the Television News Department, where I am working, has established a team on duty ready to respond quickly to the information we send back - updated every minute. Other related departments and offices also always have people on duty to support us regularly,” Captain Phung Chi Cuong recounted.
The entire working group has been working non-stop for a single minute since the beginning of the mission, and until nightfall, they still have to prepare for the next day's work. "We always wish that a day had more than 24 hours, so that we would have more time to carry out the mission. Night always falls too quickly, and too long. Every passing moment is precious - precious for the rescue team, and also a challenge for the reporter team when they are forced to travel and work at all times, in all places, in all conditions. Every morning when we wake up, it is a new challenge, because the mission is not the same every day. So if we cannot overcome the time pressure, we will not be able to keep up with the flow of events taking place continuously in Turkey " - Captain Phung Chi Cuong expressed.
“When you are gone, these bricks, this tree, this fire, will always remember you”
“Thank you very much, Vietnam”, the title of the work comes from the sincere thanks of the Turkish people for Vietnam’s actions and efforts in times of trouble. They, from the elderly, children, the people or the Turkish Army, often put their hands on their left chests and bow whenever they see the Vietnamese People’s Army passing by.
Captain Phung Chi Cuong shared: “It is a beautiful image, always engraved in our minds. And as a Turkish journalist sincerely told the delegation: “When you are gone, these bricks, this tree, this fire, will always remember you”.
Although having worked in many difficult and arduous environments for many years, journalist Phung Chi Cuong and his colleagues have never worked in an earthquake zone. The days working in Türkiye have given them a lot of valuable experience, both in terms of their ability to work, the ability to effectively operate a “converged newsroom”, solidarity and mutual support in carrying out tasks, and the ability to survive in harsh conditions.
Working in a city that is only ruins, but filled with warm human affection - those are the precious feelings that the Turkish people have for the working group. “The food portions, the sips of water they shared with us during the work. Or the tears, the applause of gratitude on the farewell day at Istanbul airport. The feelings that the people and armies of Vietnam and Turkey have for each other in the harsh landscape of the Turkish winter, are the greatest and most precious things, greater than all the difficulties and challenges that we have tried to overcome in the 10 days here” - journalist Phung Chi Cuong recalled.
And the name “Thank you very much! Vietnam” is deeply rooted in the simple things that are imbued with humanity on every step of the soldiers' march in Turkey.
