Border guards are good at Khmer language.

Ho Nhu Y was born and raised in Ta An Khuong commune, Ca Mau province. In 2005, after graduating from high school, he volunteered to serve in the border guard force. During this time, he was honored to be sent by his superiors to study at the Royal University of Phnom Penh (Kingdom of Cambodia). After 5 years, he graduated with a bachelor's degree in Khmer literature. In 2011, he returned to Vietnam, was promoted to lieutenant, and continued to be sent for specialized training at the Army Officer School 1. After graduating, he returned to work at the Border Guard of An Giang province until now.

As a reconnaissance officer, performing tasks in an area with a large Khmer population and a border with neighboring Cambodia, he always cultivated ethics, lifestyle, etiquette, and military style; stayed close to and understood the area, learned about the customs and practices of the people; improved his professional skills, and continued to practice the Khmer language. After 10 years, in many positions, he became famous throughout the force as an excellent interpreter.

When asked about his dreams and ambitions, Lieutenant Colonel Ho Nhu Y confided: “Studying is very necessary for everyone, especially border guards who are performing their duties in the current revolutionary period. To fulfill all the duties and tasks of a full-time officer, I think that only through studying can we progress and complete all tasks…”.

During the past time, in addition to translating Khmer, interpreting in foreign affairs with the government and border protection forces, he has also been an interpreter for the Border Guard Academy and the National Defense Academy many times. Determining that the work of an interpreter is extremely heavy and difficult, requiring accuracy in translation, Lieutenant Colonel Ho Nhu Y has been on business trips, researching documents and Khmer textbooks, updating information on the internet, and seeking support from teachers, leaders, colleagues, and local Khmer people to improve his knowledge and skills in the field of translation and pronunciation of Khmer.

“Before each time participating in foreign translation or after completing the mission and returning to the country, comrade Ý always took the opportunity to ask his superiors for comments on his style, pronunciation, and foreign documents; always sincerely listened, learned lessons, and continued to study to improve himself. Comrade Ý is a cadre with a high level of Khmer language proficiency, is diligent in studying and knows how to improve himself…”, commented Lieutenant Colonel Huynh Chien Thang - Deputy Chief of Staff of the An Giang Provincial Border Guard Command.

With more than 20 years of working experience, with outstanding achievements in work, Lieutenant Colonel Ho Nhu Y was awarded many certificates of merit by the Border Guard Command and the People's Committee of An Giang province for participating in defense area drills, friendly exchanges, anti-smuggling; studying and following the ideology, morality, and style of Ho Chi Minh ; was awarded many certificates of merit, titles of emulation soldier, advanced soldier by the unit...
