Phuoc Tra Base is located in Phuoc Tra Commune, Da Nang City (formerly Song Tra Commune, Hiep Duc District, Quang Nam Province), an important national relic, a living witness of a heroic resistance period.

The last base of the Zone 5 Party Committee from 1973 to 1975 was located here, marking important historical events, demonstrating the will and tradition of brave and resilient struggle of the Vietnamese people, contributing to the great victory of Spring 1975, liberating the South and unifying the country.

History of formation and role of the base

In December 1946, the Party Central Committee decided to establish Zone 5 including the provinces of Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Gia Lai, and Kon Tum . In early 1955, the Central Committee decided to transfer the two provinces of Quang Tri and Thua Thien to Zone 5 and turned them into a large battlefield from the 17th parallel to the border of the Southeast region with extremely difficult and fierce fighting situations.

From then until 1973, the resistance headquarters of the Army and People here had undergone 8 moves and each time marked heroic feats. By the end of 1973, the Regional Party Committee decided to move to Phuoc Son district, Quang Nam province (now Da Nang city) to set up a base and organize the Party Congress. Phuoc Tra base became the final headquarters of the Regional Party Committee in the final stage of the resistance war against the US.

Mr. Nguyen Nguyen Sa, an officer preserving the relics of the Zone 5 Party Committee Base, said: “This base is a symbol of the determination to protect the Party and the leadership strategy throughout the resistance war against the US. The 3rd Congress is an important historical milestone in the resistance war of the Army and People of Zone 5.”

The Third Congress of the Party Committee of Zone 5 was not only an important political event but also a strategic turning point in the struggle to liberate the South and unify the country. The Congress elected comrade Vo Chi Cong as Secretary of the Party Committee of Zone 5, who led the resistance with brilliant strategies.

The Congress was attended by 264 delegates representing 47,000 party members from battlefields and local units. The Congress thoroughly grasped Resolution 21 of the Party Central Committee on "Strengthening the attack on the enemy, preparing for the general offensive and uprising to completely liberate South Vietnam".

At the same time, the task was set: “Continue to rectify the ideology of cadres, soldiers and people; step up political, military, military and diplomatic struggles. Resolutely defeat the plan to pacify and encroach, narrow the enemy's area, expand our area, develop forces and revolutionary movements in the enemy's controlled areas, maintain and develop our strength in all aspects: military, political, economic; move the revolution forward”.

Through the Congress, many Resolutions were issued, launching major campaigns to destroy the enemy, expanding liberated areas on battlefields from the Central Highlands to the plains, creating favorable opportunities to liberate provinces throughout the Region.

When I came here, I was able to see with my own eyes the artifacts and images related to the events at the base. I saw the sacrifice not only in sweat but also in blood.”

Living relic of revolutionary tradition

Today, Phuoc Tra Base is not only a national relic but also a place to educate the revolutionary tradition for the younger generations. This relic has been invested in restoration in 3 phases, repairing and building important items such as the exhibition house, the 3rd Congress hall, the office of comrade Vo Chi Cong and the memorial steles. This is where precious artifacts are kept, reflecting the heroic historical period of the Military and People of Zone 5.

Lieutenant Colonel Pham Thanh Hai, Deputy Political Commissar of the 270th Engineer Brigade, shared: “The 270th Engineer Brigade is the main Engineering unit of Military Region 5. Promoting the tradition of the People's Armed Forces Heroes in the period of renovation, every year the Brigade organizes for officers and soldiers to visit red addresses and historical sites, in order to learn and further promote the heroic tradition of the army.”

Soldier Bui Do Huy Phuc, Company 13, Battalion 4, Engineer Brigade 270, shared: “When I visited Uncle Vo Chi Cong’s house, I did not think that a great revolutionary leader would live in a simple house with simple furniture. This makes me feel even more proud of the leadership example and sacrifice for the independence and freedom of the country of my fathers and grandfathers.”

Red address and potential for developing relic tourism

Phuoc Tra Base is not only a historical site but also a “red address” attracting domestic and international visitors. Developing relic tourism and community tourism here not only helps preserve historical values but also promotes economic development for local people.

To connect historical relics with the community, Phuoc Tra commune has invested in building Tra Va Village, which is expected to develop community tourism through activities such as weaving, rattan, and traditional brocade weaving of the Ca Dong people. Visitors will have the opportunity to participate in activities such as campfires, traditional singing and dancing, and learn about the cultural life of local people.

Combining historical tourism with community tourism at Phuoc Tra Base will be a new direction, helping to attract tourists, preserve historical values, and develop sustainable economy for the local community. This will contribute to raising awareness of revolutionary traditions, while creating an attractive tourism opportunity for young generations and international visitors./.
