For the first time, a 2,500-ton barge was mobilized to serve the high-altitude fireworks display to welcome the new year 2024, at the junction of Can Tho River and Hau River, Ninh Kieu District.
On February 8 (29th of Lunar New Year), a 60m long, 16m wide barge was brought from Vinh Long province to the port in Nam Can Tho urban area, Cai Rang district, about 2km from Ninh Kieu wharf. Here, about 90 officers and soldiers of the Can Tho City Military Command brought 1,000 high-altitude fireworks (many types and colors) to the barge for installation, preparing to serve the New Year's Eve celebration of the Lunar New Year 2024.

On the afternoon of the 30th of Tet, the barge will be brought to the confluence of Can Tho River and Hau River, 300 meters from Hoa Su Restaurant, in Cai Khe Ward, Ninh Kieu District. A 3600 CV tugboat equipped with a water cannon will be mobilized to support fire prevention and fighting along with the barge.
The high-altitude fireworks display will take place on the river for 15 minutes, starting at 0:00 on February 10 (New Year's Eve of the Year of the Dragon 2024). This is the first time Can Tho has launched high-altitude fireworks to welcome the New Year on a barge moored in the middle of the river.
In addition, on New Year's Eve this year, Can Tho will have 4 low-altitude fireworks displays at 10 p.m. in Thot Not district and Phong Dien, Thoi Lai and Co Do districts. The funding for the fireworks display will come from the city's socialized resources.

Can Tho is the largest city in the Mekong Delta with a population of over 1.2 million. In the 2015-2020 period, the locality achieved an average economic growth rate of 7.53% per year, with per capita income reaching 97.2 million VND (equivalent to 4,136 USD); export turnover of goods and services earning foreign currency reached over 11 billion USD (an average increase of 19.75% per year).
In the 2020-2025 period, Can Tho aims for an economic growth rate (GRDP) of 7.5-8% per year. The average gross regional domestic product per capita by 2025 will reach 145-160 million VND, equivalent to 6,200-6,800 USD. The poverty rate by 2025 will decrease to below 0.5%.
