On May 20, a serious landslide occurred in Thoi Lai district, Can Tho city, causing a house to be completely submerged in the river. Fortunately, there were no casualties in this incident.
According to a quick report from the Civil Defense, Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue Command of Thoi Lai district, the incident occurred in the early morning of May 20, in Thoi Khanh A hamlet, Tan Thanh commune.
The landslide is located along a 2m wide rural traffic route on the O Mon River.
The landslide caused a 2.5m subsidence from the riverbank to the mainland, with a depth of 6m, a total length of 35m, of which 15m was completely eroded and the remaining 20m was partially eroded.
The landslide caused the house of Mr. Nguyen Van Dung, residing in Thoi Khanh A hamlet, to collapse completely into the river. The house has a solid structure with a tiled floor, corrugated iron roof and brick walls, with a total area of 80 square meters, with total damage estimated at about 150 million VND.
Immediately after the incident occurred, local authorities urgently deployed response measures according to the "four on-site" motto.
Local forces have urgently carried out temporary repairs to the landslide traffic section to ensure maximum safety for people and vehicles passing through the area.
Authorities also installed danger signs and warning ropes and assigned people to regularly monitor the situation at the scene.
In order to support people to overcome the consequences of landslides, the Civil Defense - Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue Command of Thoi Lai district supported 5 million VND to Mr. Nguyen Van Dung's household.
Faced with the situation of landslides that could cause long-term insecurity for people and infrastructure, the Civil Defense, Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue Command of Thoi Lai district also sent proposals and recommendations to the People's Committee of Can Tho city and the Civil Defense, Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue Command of Can Tho city to consider supporting an additional 20 million VND for Mr. Nguyen Van Dung's household to repair the house, helping the family stabilize their lives.
Thoi Lai district proposed that the city soon have a plan to organize a detailed survey and support investment funding to build a solid embankment in the landslide area.
The construction of the embankment not only helps protect the traffic route and ensure safety for people and vehicles, but also maintains long-term stability for households living around the affected area on the O Mon River.
Just a few days earlier, in the early morning of May 13, another serious landslide occurred in O Mon district, on a traffic route in Long Dinh area, Long Hung ward, along the left bank of Bang Tang river.
The landslide caused a 46m long section of road to collapse, of which about 30m was completely eroded and the remaining 16m was severely cracked and collapsed. The landslide penetrated 4-5m into the mainland, collapsing almost the entire road surface with a depth of 0.5-2m, cutting off people's travel. Fortunately, this landslide did not cause any damage to people, property or houses.
Notably, this collapsed road has just been upgraded and expanded at a cost of more than 10 billion VND and the landslide area has been completed by the contractor since the end of 2024.
Immediately after the incident, Long Hung ward authorities quickly set up ropes, placed warning signs and mobilized forces to build a temporary road around the area to connect traffic.
At the same time, Can Tho Center for Clean Water and Rural Environment also arranged workers to connect pipelines to supply clean water to people.
In 2024, in Can Tho city, there were 27 landslides, causing 14 houses to collapse, 1 warehouse to collapse and affecting 35 other houses, with total estimated damage of more than 15 billion VND.
Faced with this situation, the Can Tho city government is actively implementing solutions to limit riverbank erosion, focusing on building anti-erosion embankments at vulnerable points and relocating households living in high-risk areas.
On April 3, Can Tho city started construction of an emergency embankment project to prevent landslides on the O Mon River, through Thoi An ward, with a total estimated investment cost of about 130 billion VND, expected to be completed in 2026./.
